I have been offered Mike Sweeney and Jose Mesa for Casey Fossum and Jason Giambi.

My team is struggling mightily, and Giambi has been terrible/injured. My only source of saves is Scott Williamson, and I know Mesa isn't the best option, but he does have 12 saves.

Think I should go for it?

Here's my lineup:

C- Matheny
1B - Fullmer
2b: Vidro
3b: Glaus
SS: Rollins
OF: Dunn, Matsui, Everett
Util: Berkman
Bench: Winn, Giambi

SP: Leiter, Maddux, Fossum, Graves, Mays, Lackey, Lowe, Rogers, Redman(DL)
RP: Williamson, Villafuerte(DL)

how many teams are in your league... i ask b/c it will determine the amount of players available as free agents. It would also help to know the statistical categories in your league.

I have Giambi on my team, he has been a blight on my roster so far, but HE IS GOOOD. patience will be rewarded. Bench him for now, but don't trade him.

Mesa is insane. you might get 25-30 saves out of him, but expect to pay for them in ERA WHIP and getting annoyed to death by his innate ability to come into a an easy close situation and screw it up. IF losses are counted in your league I would NOT recommend him.

Sweeney isn't too bad but i think Giambi has better potential...Fossum looks like a better starter than Mesa is a closer... Do you really need saves that bad, and is Mesa really the only guy that can give them to you?

14 teams, nothing really worthwhile in the free agent pool, at least for pitchers. Some decent hitters available.

Categories are:

RBI
SB
CS
BB
IBB
K
AVG
OBP
SLG

Are you in a head-to-head league or one that does the points thing?

As far as the trade, IMO it's a tough call. In the last few years, Giambi has proven that he's a good power hitter. So you can either hang on to him based on past performance and hope that he can help you in the long term, or you can attempt to stop the bleeding now by picking up a hotter player. I'm sure that's what the person offering you the trade is thinking. Trade a hot hitter (Sweeney) for a slumping one (Giambi) in the hopes that he'll get back to his old form and start banging HR. I think what I would do is try a counter offer to either just pick up Mesa or see if he would be willing to take another player in place of Giambi. One thing to keep in mind is that it's a long season, so if you're not down by much now, it's ok.

My Opinion is to refuse the trade.

reasons against the trade:
1) Giambi will break out sooner or later, you will want him when he does.
2) Saves is just one category. a good SP has bigger impact than a good Closer, and Fossum > Mesa

However, caveats:
1) your league stats have things like H/R/SV/CG (closed games?) that will make a closer almost as important as a starter.
2) If you think that improving will pitching stats (which you might or might not) will outweigh a reduction in your Offensive stats (which you will sooner or later) then you might consider it.

CG = complete games

I rejected the deal... gonna try and work on something for just Mesa.

If your league is using every single one of those categories (28 of them) to determine the record from week to week, then IMO you don't have a whole lot to worry about. 38 games over the rest of the season is nothing when you have 28 possible wins each week. In my league, we only use 14 categories (R,HR,RBI,SB,AVG,OBP, FPCT,W,CG,SHO,SV,K,ERA,WHIP) so 38 games would be a lot more for me to make up than for you.
