Fans spin, no post

Last night I put my system into standby (didn't check to see if it entered it fine)... When I came back this morning, the green light on the front of the case was flashing like it was in standby, but all the fans were still spinning. No monitor display, no response from the system. I tried holding down the power button, and it would seem to shut off, but when I tried turning it back on, got no display and no hd activity. I turned off the machine using the power supply switch on the back, and unplugged it.

Now when I power on the system, all the fans spin, but that is it. No beeps, no display, and the green power light doesn't even come on. The motherboard's onboard power led lights up. If I remove the video card, there are still no beeps, so it isn't getting to POST.

Tried removing cmos battery & reseting the motherboard with the jumper, no effect.

I think it may be the motherboard, power supply, or (maybe) CPU. The computer was on a surge suppressor, and there are no other damaged computers or blinking microwaves to indicate a power outage. My southbridge fan sounds like it is definitely going out though; if the computer is on its side, it makes a horrible noise (which I didn't notice because I don't ever have it on its side!)

I always keep a close watch on my temps, even though my machine isn't overclocked, and I get around 38c load on my cpu & mb, 30c idle.

Asus a8n5x
AMD x2 3800 939
Coolermaster RealPower 450
eVGA 7900 GT
4x Corsair DDR 3200 Value memory

I do have another 939 PCI-E machine that I can use to swap out components, but if the PS is bad I don't want to ruin other components.

1) Has anyone had this kind of problem?
2) What is the "best" way to swap out components so I a) don't ruin anything else and b) can have a solid case to present when I ask for an RMA on whatever is bad?
3) Am I missing anything? Any other suggestions?

here's what I usually do...

1) make sure that you your internal speaker attached correctly.
2) take all of the PCI cards, USB cables, IDE cables, memory, out...so all you have in the system is the vid card and power.
3) apply power and see if you get system beeps. You should get a memory error straight away.
4) add back one of the memory stick in the appropriate slot. it's different for different boards, but for me in a single chip solution I need to put it in the 3rd slot from the CPU.
5) apply power and see if you can post.
6) try the CMOS reset again...you need to...turn off the power (I usually unplug it to be safe)...jump the correct jumper...then hold in the power button for 30 seconds...still unplugged from power...then plug it back in and turn it on...
7)if none of this works to get you to post...then lookup the beep codes you are getting to see what exactly the BIOS is hanging on.
8) maybe switch the memory chips around and try it again.
9) if you still can't boot...I would be...dollar to doughnuts it's your motherboard...but it could still be the PSU, vid, or CPU.

In order of likely suspects after stage 9, I would go with.

1) Mobo
2) PSU
3) Vid card
4) CPU
5) Memory
6) Gremlin (hope it's not this)

Hope that helps and good luck!

Use the other machine to check the bad components but never the other way around until you know for sure what is wrong. So start with the video card of the bad machine. Test it on the working machine. Next the CPU. DO NOT TEST THE SUSPECTED BAD PSU TO THE WORKING UNIT. Instead test the working PSU into the bad unit. If all three components proved to be working properly, then do Cronjob's procedure to pinpoint the problem to the mobo.

Your symptoms sound exactly what I experienced about 2 weeks ago; all fans spin up, but nothing to the monitor. I'm in the process of RMA'ing my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe (mailed it out Saturday). After you've tested your components in the spare pc, I would contact Asus. They have a 3 year warranty.

My diagnosis was enlightening. I had already checked the mb for cap problems, but hadn't looked up inside the power supply. When I did, I found a grotesquely melted globs of power supply parts. I plugged in my extra ps, but the motherboard remains dead. The south bridge fan stopped the horrible noise though; perhaps it was getting the wrong voltage and over stressing it.

I wonder if Asus will RMA the board now, or if Cooler Master will take responsibility for the fried motherboard. I doubt it in both cases! I'll try though. :/

Thanks everyone for the help, wish me luck!
