Wow... thanks for all the other "up and coming" artist listings. I'll definitely have to check them out.l

I've truly just got into John Mayer from word of mouth from someone who i respect their musical taste, and had no idea that he was on the radio.. let alone MTV.

This upsets me because now he is going to be molded and changed as luv2chill pointed out. Oh well... at least someone on MTV is truly talented now. :)

I pretty much agree with a lot of what luv2chill had to say. I thoroughly enjoy his music and find it refreshing that somebody who's talented can actually make it these days. More power to him. Just because there are other people out there who haven't made it doesn't mean people should suddenly begrudge him his success. There will ALWAYS be people who don't "make it big" who somebody else feels is more talented. That's just the way the music business is. Of course, if you're truly EXTREMELY talented you should be able to at least make a comfortable living off music even without hitting it big. My brother works at a publishing house and recording studio and he works with tons of sessionists and song writers who aren't really well known to the general public, but make extremely comfortable six (and sometimes seven) figure incomes from session work, tour supporting gigs, and songwriting.

My personal favorite song of his is '83. I've only got a couple of songs from the Inside Wants Out album.

Those of you who used to like him, but now are either turned off or just don't like him because your think he's been commercialized too much ought to at least consider the fact that at LEAST he's bringing something different to the table for people who would've previously never bothered with his style of music. (Like luv2chill, I think he sounds distinctly unique from Dave Matthews, if anything he sounds more like a modern day James Taylor.) To me exposing people to a different style is kind of refreshing in a day where seemingly EVERYTHING has a Creed-like alternative, techno, or hiphop sound. I like most modern music okay, but I'm at my heart a big blues fan. Still, I don't take offense when Eric Clapton releases a blues album and everybody suddenly takes notice of the blues for awhile. I think it's good for people to be reminded of other music styles, particularly styles which I personally feel require more overall talent.

And I offered this once before, but if anyone wants a burned copy of Inside Wants Out (John allows it), just PM me.

I didn't know copying that album was kosher. In that case, I'll offer up copies too if anyone wants them. I can even attest that the original I'll be copying from was handed to me by John himself. ;)

How can you guys say he sounds nothing like Dave Matthews? When my girl first played the cd... i thought it was Dave! when she explained to me who it was, i was like, "wow... throw in a trumpet somewhere, and it sounds just like Dave"

Now that I listen to him more, I can obivously pick out the difference between the two bands, but there are clearly some similar elements to the type of music they put out -- both vocally and in sound. If you really hate things being "labeled" and shy away from comparing him to Dave, you're taking things too seriously. When someone asks about a new artist or band and ask what they sound like.. what do you say? "Can't be classified?" No, you compare them to a previously known band or artist that has similar qualities.

anyway... i'm just saying :D

Are you, a Berkeley student, even allowed to use that phrase? ;)

Spooner, no offense to you man, but you may not have heard much DMB if you think you can add a trumpet to JM's songs and come up with DMB. First of all, there's no trumpet to speak of in the Dave Matthews Band. There is a sax, a violin, percussion, keys, bass and rhythm guitar, but no trumpet.

And the only comparison I can possibly make is that their voices sound "slightly" similar (which is probably why you thought of DMB when hearing JM for the first time). But their whole musical backgrounds, influences, roots... are completely different from one another. Seriously, I want you to queue up some DMB and JM back-to-back and see what I'm talking about. First off, DMB songs will 99% of the time have sax and violin parts, whereas John's songs are just him plus drums and bass (and some keyboards). But even beyond the instruments involved, Dave's songs aren't quite as jazzy/bluesy as John's are. They're also much more intricate, with the different instruments playing off each other (in a true "band" sense)... as opposed to Mayer, who is a frontman with a backup band.

Also, lyrically the two could not be any further apart. Part of the allure of JM is that the content of his songs is instantly accessible (even to teenyboppers). He sings about real-life events that happen to him and just about everyone else. Check out some of Dave's lyrics OTOH... completely esoteric, poetic, and metaphorical. You can't listen to/read them once and instantly know what Dave is writing about (sometimes you'll never know exactly). John's lyrics couldn't be more obvious... "I'm going to run through the halls of my high school... there's no such thing as the real world... etc. etc. etc."

See what I'm getting at here? On the surface it may be easy to compare the two, but they really aren't alike at all. I may get more "uppity" about comparisons than the average person, but it's because I am passionate about both of these artists and the comparison seems unjustified... it sells both artists short.

I don't like comparisons period because I really appreciate artists that bring a unique, reinvented sound to the table. In this era where popular music all sounds alike, I love it when I hear something that sounds different. And I think people do themselves a disservice when they say "oh I only listen to punk" or "I only like emo and rock" or "I'm a big fan of pop" because it's so limiting. When someone asks me what John Mayer sounds like I say "he doesn't really sound like anything else that's out there... why don't I just play it for you and see if you like it". In that way I'm not stabbing in the dark for comparisons that can't be made and I'm not selling John short by giving people a reason to judge him before they've even heard him.

I don't really know how to get across my feelings about this whole thing. It may seem insignificant to you, but I think the attitudes around classification of music (and anything in general) only draws lines where they need not be drawn.

But seriously, queue up some DMB and John Mayer back to back in winamp and then tell me that they sound similar!! :)

l2c --

i couldn't agree more with all the things you're saying. i think you took my words a tad too literally...

a very well written post, and i wish i had the time to speak more completely on each one, but i got this place that pays me to do this work stuff, AND they expect me to actually get it done... ;)

At any rate, i'm not biting on my "they sound similar" opinion. I've actually cued them up before and they sound alike. Only when you actually go into nitpicking out the differences does it start to sound like really different sounds and vocals. I agree with your points, but I'm speaking from a much higher / lighter level.... like how i was first introduced.

"Oh sh!t.. this a new Dave song?"

:p

He has a strong background in jazz and blues, and it shows in his music. I was so happy to finally be able learn songs by artists I liked that didn't consist solely of power chords and wimpy little solos. His lyrics amaze me as well... they're heartfelt but not as whiny as all those whiny emo bands (although I love Dashboard Confessional). Every one of his songs is about something that I've either experienced or that I hope to experience at some point in my life.
very well put :)

a friend of mine first introduced me to his music thinking that he might have been my cousin (my last name is also mayer) and i've been hooked ever since... i like his solo stuff the best, but i dont think the newer stuff has gone off the deep end into mainstream territory yet

He's touring with Guster and Martin Sexton
John is touring with Martin Sexton? OMG!

I like John Mayer; he's a talented guitarist and vocalist, though sometimes I tire of his songs. Martin, on the other hand, is the best performer I've seen (out of around 500 bands now). To anyone who wants me to put up some live Martin Sexton (he allows it), LMK, and I'll choose the best set from my collection and try to get it up on the web. He is AMAZING.

I happen to catch a video of him performing on Conan last night.

I didn't know he was such a pretty boy :Q He's also kind of a spaz... i thought he'd be more tame.

Oh well, still love the music.
