Ok. I thought a fan was a fan but now there are many types of fans ?

Can someone explain the difference between 4 pin fan, 3 pin fan and smart fans?

Also, if you plug the fan into the motherboard does the power come from the motherboard or do you still plug the fan into the psu (in addition to the mb). If you plug it into both places then why do mb have specs that indicte the fan can only draw xxx amps ?

SmartFans have a thermal sensor built in. Usually only works well for exhaust fans. There are two types of four pin fans: one takes power from an optical drive type power connector, the other uses a mobo header like the 3-pin but it also has a PWM fan speed controller pin (only on Intel mobos right now for some HSFs for Intel CPUs. 3-pin are the standard now and will work on just about anything (even that new4-pin Intel connector).
