Fanmate safe for 120mm? (6x current of 80mm)

I'd like to slow down the 120mm in my new Antec SLK3700 but am utterly incompetent with a soldering iron -- I'm thinking I'll
* replace fan 4pin cable with 3pin
* plug it into fanmate
* use 3-pin to 4-pin to connect to power supply since I assume the 0.65A draw of the fan isn't good for a mobo power connector

But, one listing for the Fanmate says it has a max rating for the power it throttles (because of heat I assume) and I'm wondering whether the fanmate is safe with a 120mm.

I have some of those FanMate's and the max is 6W so it seems your fan is too grande. You may want to get a nice Panaflo low or medium speed. It could then draw from a mainboard header anyway and use SpeedFan to automatically regulate the speed.

Or you can just run the stock fan at 7 volts by moving some of the wires on the Molex connector. Serch Google for "7 volt" or "7 volt trick", you should get plenty of hits. There may even be a sticky or FAQ about it here at Anandtech.

7Volt.com is a good place to start ;)
7volt mods aren't as complicated as soldering a potentiometer or resistor in line, so you could probably handle this.
if not, take a look at these for more power per channel.

All depends on the power consumption of the fan, though, which varies from fan to fan, in like size even.

i used my fanmate with a 120mm high RPM fan I jacked from an old proliant. The fan claims it draws .49amps. Anyway, works fine with fanmate.
