Fanless or not?

I have just found that some PSU's are being made without fans. Is this an indication of poor quality or is there more to it?

Actually, a Fanless PSU must be of extremely good quality to reliably work that way. You need extremely high efficiency, as that reduces the waste heat, so that means that most components will be top notch. If efficiency wasn't high, you couldn't go Fanless like that. An example is Seasonic Platinum Fanless 520W.

Yeah, fanless PSUs are usually higher efficiency, higher quality and thus more expensive than fanned ones. I'm running 500W fanless in my primary rig and it's wonderful. It powers 4770K with 290X and barely gets warm under full load with just residual case airflow. I also have fanless 300W FSP that I used in my e8400 based HTPC until a couple of months ago, unfortunately the same PSU refuses to work with newer motherboards. If money was no object I would have loved to buy another fanless PSU for the HTPC, but they're far too expensive, never go on sale, any my current HTPC is almost inaudible already.
