Fanless Duron 650 with a Globalwin FOP32 - This a good idea?

Im trying to make my server as quiet as possible but the damn CPU fan is too noisy (heh, i must be getting touchy 😉 )
If i was to pop a FOP32 on there do u reckon i would get away with dumping the fan seeing as im not overclocking?

Any thoughts or ideas?

thanx,

rockhard =)

I wouldn't suggest removing the fan, since it seriously helps airflow.
If you like, go to tweakmeister and check out Electronics for Case modders. You could try feeding the fan less Volts, it will slow down & quiet the fan a lot
(I had an 80mm fan that I thought was AMAZINGLY quiet, cuz it was quieter than both my 60mm fans, but turns out I was running it on 5V instead of 12V - yikes, surprised it even spun !)

cheers,

I don't know how well that would work, but I have the retail heatsink that came with my Duron 650 and it is very quiet in my system at home. The retail heatsink that comes with the Duron 650 is the smallest one Taisol makes (CEK724). I know that these temps are not the most accurate, but for reference, my Duron is usually in the low 30s even under a full load. BTW the HSF from Taisol runs about $8.

You can also get a larger fan attachment for your Fop32-1 so you can install a quiet case fan to it and still have the airflow.

You could try it by making sure you have a thin layer of compound on, remove the side cover, disconnect the CPU fan, turn a tabletop fan on(pointing into the case), and boot straight into the bios and check the temperature.
If it's not too bad, turn off the table fan, check temps then if it's still okay, replace the cover and check again. Finally boot into Windows and use MB monitor or similiar to check temps again.

I run my Athlon 500@750 with no fans, not even a PS fan. I have a fan in the basement and pump the air into my case directly at the CPU HS and it exits out the PS.

Quiet as a mouse! (well I can barely hear my Maxtor)🙂

Thanx for the help guys 🙂

joinT - Thanx for the link. I had a go at changing the fan from 12v to 5 volt. My system is bearly audible barring the PSU fan now 🙂)

Now all i need to do is sort out my Enermax 330 watt PSU which is the noisiest part left in the rig 🙁
Ive never opened up an Enermax before - is the fan soldered onto PCB? or is it a plug in affair? It really bugs me why PSU manufacturers cant use the same plug as normal fan headers 🙁
If anyone who has opened up an Enermax before can advise me with this be much appreciated,

rockhard =)

this what I did with my FOP32. I have an Enermax PS so instead of my 92MM fan that sits inside the PS I just mounted outside and just let it suck the air from the HS. So there's one less fan in my system.

I agree with Evil, if you need a quiet HSF, the Taisol CGK is silent. I have to unplug may case fan to even hear it and I have a pretty quiet Sunon 80mm case fan. The sink is big enough that you still get great cooling.
