Fancy Yourself A Cook/Chef?

Ornery

Lifer
We had a friend (who has moved out of state) who used to cook wondrous "gourmet" meals. Eh, he did OK, but no big deal in my opinion. Trouble is, the kitchen looked like a cyclone had come through by the time he was done, and it seemed it was his wife's job to clean it up! Just ain't worth the trouble to me.

When I cook a meal, which isn't often, I clean up as I go. By the time we sit down to eat, there's nothing left but dishes to clear off. The pans, mixing bowls, and cutting board are washed, dried AND put away ASAP. I don't know what my wife does while she's cooking, but nothing's put away till after dinner, and by then it's a huge project. I mean, she must stand and watch the roast in the oven for an hour, instead of picking up anything.

Oh, and clean up seems to mean throwing huge corningware into the dishwasher, so there's no room for dishes, washing pans and leaving them on the counter "to dry" for the next few days, and leaving the sink strainers full of crap, that's left to stink or harden there over the next few days. Microwave looks like something exploded, and coffee maker's filter full of grounds left to drip on the warming plate, and remain there till someone has to make a new pot.

It takes an hour to prepare a meal, 15 minutes to eat it, and then a half hour to clean up. Is it worth it? 😕

I live off of fast food. The only clean up is the removal of napkins, straw wrappers, and the occasional french fry from the floor of my car.

I'm with you, User. Fast food, or fast meals, whatever is the least trouble. We always have our evening meal together, I like that, but it doesn't have to be anything fancy.

Yeah that's one of the big things I hate about when cooking. That's why whenever I cook, I make A LOT. If I'm gonna spend an hour preparing a meal, and hour to clean up, it better last me for at least two days.

I usually only cook for myself, after which I'll do all the cleaning myself.

if I'm cooking for someone else, though, or if someone is cooking for me, we'll usually split it -- one person does the cooking and the other does the cleaning.

...one person does the cooking and the other does the cleaning.

See, that's my problem. If I cook, my wife's got next to nothing to clean up after the meal. If she cooks, the whole kitchen's a mess. It seems like she tries to use as many pots, pans & utensils as possible, where I do the opposite. Drives me crazy!

Three rules to keeping anything clean:
1. Clean up as you go (put stuff away while you're working, like if you've already used the spices you need for cooking, put them back...less mess to clean up when you're done)
2. Clean up after yourself (when you're done, like you said, do the dishes asap)
3. If you see a mess, clean it up (that's what they do at Disneyland...every employee picks up any trash they see, that's why it's such a clean place, in general...even if it's somebody else's mess, clean it up)

I do the dishes & floors exept the bathrooms. MsColin does the laundry & cleans the bathrooms. We both cook, but I'm better at it.
