fan switch?

i want to make (or buy, if you've seen one) a device for totally switching off my fans instead of controlling the speed
how would i do this WITHOUT cutting the wires to my fans (these have 4-pin molex)
if (i almost know for sure i do) i need a solderig iron, i need a cheap one for this

Have you got any experience with electronics? If so, i can easily draw you a basic circuit diagram to show you how to do this. But yes, you will need a soldering iron to build the circuit. Is this a problem?

Not hard to do and no cutting of fan wires necessary. You could build it on a bay filler plate no problem.
Radio Schlock has most of the parts you would need.

i just need to know where to solder the wires to (or w/e else is nessicary (sp?))

Find a short 4pin Molex M-F jumper, cut the 12V wire, put switch in between. Did you need help with the circuit any more than this? If you have 2 fans you can just do the same thing with a double pull switch, or wire them both to the same switch as they don't draw much current anyways.

I would recommend soldering and heatshrink for the connections though it isn't 100% necessary.

and just making sure, i dont do anything with the 5V or ground wires, correct?

Right, the fans run on 12V.

Pin# Color Function
1 Yellow +12V DC
2 Black Ground
3 Black Ground
4 Red +5V DC

Only wire you need to cut is the yellow one. Hope this helps.

The +12 wire on most fans is RED the +12 Wires from the PSU are YELLOW - the grounds are ALL black. If a fan has a yellow wire, that is usually the speed sensor wire.

He didn't want to cut his fan wires so we were talking about a regular PSU jumper 4 pin molex Male to Female, however that is good advice Zepper.

You don't NEED a soldering iron if you don't have the money for one. There are Marr connectors that work quite well although they are ugly (and the cheaper Marretes). You could even use butt connectors and crimp them, though that is not a method I would recommend as it is difficult to get a good connection.

However if you plan to buy a soldering iron anyways then just solder and heatshrink the connections and you can be sure they will never separate or short out.

Yes it will just take a bit to get the wires hot.

Try to read up on Cold solder joints and avoid them at all costs.
