Fan spins for a split second and nothing,,,,,,help

Last night my machine died like in a black out and now just the fan will spin for a sec and the LCD monitor awakens for a sec when I push the start button. I am staying at my Mom's house cause she is sick and don't have other computers and parts to swap out one at a time to try to isolate the problem. I tried each of my ram individually and nothing. Anybody know what this problem sounds like? I was thinking and hoping power supply but i really don't know. Could even may be the power switch but I don't know. Any suggestions. Thanks much!

Hope your mom feels better soon. Don't have any ideas to help you out but here's a bump for you.

Yeah, could be the power supply. I would try just unplugging it for a couple of hours, and then try again. May sound crazy, but that happened to my dads computer once after a power outtage. Unplugged the PSU and the keyboard for 2 hours, plugged back in and it worked. I've also seen those symptoms with a bad motherboard.

Funny you should mention that - same thing happened to me while building my new system. Power went out, and after that the system wouldn't turn on. I figured I screwed up something in the build so I disconnected all the peripherals from the case and was going to open it up to look around. I dragged the rig upstairs so I had better light to work on it, and it worked the first time. Put everything back together and it's been fine ever since.

I thought it was just a fluke but I guess not.
