fan speed control on motherboard ? Can speed actively be set/adjusted by software ?

from a posting:

>>>
You can control the speed with a utility like SpeedFan without having the speed-monitoring feature: selecting a fan speed of 60% at a certain temperature level and range controls the fan according to pulse-width-modulation, and the "control" does not utilize the fan-speed monitoring in any way.
>>>

I am getting a dfi lanparty ut nf4...and i might sound moronic...i KNOW that there are several connectors, CPUFAN, CHASFAN1, CHASFAN2 etc.... and those support speed monitoring since they have the SENSE connector.

But i really am clueless (and i didnt see any information) whether its actually possible to adjust the speed of the fans itself via the mainboard/software. (With fans plugged in the approptriate connectors).

SO...the above posting suggests that a tool liek speedfan can actually actively SET/ADJUST the fan speeds ? I always thought for speed control i need a special fan-control module etc.

Please someone enlighten me. How do i know which boards/sensors actually support the adjustment of the speeds ?

Btw. i will build with a XP-120 w/ variable Enermax 120mm.

Addendum: In case you wonder...maybe my question is not THAT pathetic. if it were that easy that everyone can easily adjust speeds with software...why then use people stuff like 12V-->7V converters and/or special fan controls w/ thermal sensors ?

Thanks a lot !

Yes you can control the speed of the fan, how many hearders is another question; most likely 2.

If your going to use SpeedFan there is no need for variable Enermax.

b/c people trust hardware mroe than software.. b/c speedfan won't work if it's not loaded. as soon as you turn it off the speed will go back to normal..
b/c there are people who don't care about spending more $$. I'm not one of them..

i was reading around on the speedfan page and i know more now...ok..so it depends on the sensor-chips, meaning most actually support it.

The argument with "if speedfan is not loaded..."...you are of course right. But i think the biggest advantage would be using speedfan so it can up the speed dynamically according to my temps. The Enermax is variable, thats right...but it would be MUCH more elgant if it would adjust its speed itself (with the help of speedfan). I guess i will have to experiment w/ speedfan a bit once my build is complete.

I'm sure your brand new DFI would support it.

It is a much more elegant solution, both my CPU and system temp are controlled with Speedfan.

Speedfan is a great prog. But many boards will not support it....even new boards. It all depends on circuitry and if the MB manufacturer included it. On many boards only the CPU header can be controlled, nothing else. My ASUS P4R800 Deluxe is like that.

You're lucky if you can get it to work.....and it take a while to learn everything that prog can do. The latest version is 4.20. You can't beat free.....
