Has anyone noticed that manfs. fan specs are wrong ? w/ relation to noise

I read a fan comparison on directron.com site and all the 80mm fans were way past their spec on noise levels.

http://www.directron.com/noise.html

All I want is accurate info, how are manfs measuring their db ratings ?
I have 3 Everflow 80mm fans in my case (39cfm/26db) & was thinking of replacing them w/ panaflow L1 fans (24cfm/21db) but based on directrons tests, why bother ? :(

I now will try to stick to low rpm 120mm fans if possible. ie Vantec Stealth (53cfm/28db) & JMC J120L (61cfm/26db).

Jose

There are no real standards is the real problem.....

Also personally I think you should take the Directron test with a grain of salt. I have seen a lot of debate about it's accuracy, but what convinced me it was crap was when I read they claimed that a Panaflo L1A produced more noise than an Enermax UC-8FAB. I used to have 6 of those Enermax fans and they are as loud as hell. They are much louder than the Panaflo H1A or even the U1A!

IMHO the switch to higher quality fans (Panaflo, Vantec, etc) is definately worth the investment.

That's what I was planning to do, till I read their test. :( I was going to use Panaflo L1A 80mm fans to replace my stock Everflow 80mm fans (39cfm/26dba).

Do grommets and/or rubber gaskets reduce noise ?

Low RPM/CFM fans, not really. I would imagine with Vantec Tornados or such they would help but then you don't really need the silence anyways.

yeah... like WobbleWobble said they really help on higher speed fans.
L1A's don't create very much vibration. That said, I still use 3M foam tape even installing L1A's. (Looks like a green plaid roll of tape) It's a lot cheaper than grommets. I just snipoff a piece to apply to the corners of the fans before putting them in and it gets rid of any vibration transfer. A roll will last quite a long time.
