I have a super lanboy with the stock 120 mm fans. I really want to replace a least the front fan. It's whining way too much.
From a quick google search I beleive the specs are 1200rpm, 38.94cfm, 24.85 dB(A)).
Do I have any options to replace the fan(s)? Most importanly I want to keep the sound down. It would be great to keep the same or better rpms and cfm but if I have to sacrifice a bit I will.
BTW the current front fan is a blue illuminated one and I do not need that at all. Non illuminated would be perfectly fine.
thanks

suggetions, links, ideas are welcomed.

those specs don't suggest a loud fan. Maybe it is going bad?

It's been a little on the loud side since it was new. It may have gotten a bit worse but if theree's something out there that will be quieter I want it.

OP, you can never make a direct comparison to dBA ratings. The fan specs lie...Big time.
The fan ppl are just as bad about telling fibs as the PSU folks.

Undervolt the Yate Loons with a $10 Sunbeam Rheobus. From the same e-tailer.
On a controller they will be silent but you will have the option of more intake when needed.

You mean one of these? If so, waht all do I need? Just the 2 fans and the Rheobus? Does it has 4 knobs because it controls 4 fans???
How does it connect? Just the fans go to it and then it goes to the molex on the PS?

One 4 pin molex plugs into the controller, then the 3 pins plug in to their jacks on the controller. Simple. Buy a couple of fan extensions as the rear fan's wire will not reach the controller. That's one of the best but cheapest controllers. I have two in use.

The other two ports can be put to work if you add fans or change cases.

My Sunbeam Rheobus came with a Y cable so it doesn't take up a psu connection, Two (2) 4-pin (molex) to 3 pin connectors, and a 2-pin to 3-pin extension.

So if your fans are tailed with a 3-pin connectors they will attach directly to the controller. If they are 4-pin (molex) just use the provided connectors.

Yes the Sunbeam is connected to the psu and can control at least 4 items (fans, lights, etc). I actually have a few 3-pin splitters and am using it to control 7 fans.

edit: the only negative about the Sunbeam (I have a couple also) is the ultra-bright LEDs, which can be toned down trough various means,

I got 4 Cooler Master Pro 2L LED fans and altough you can hear them very slightly when running full blast, if I turn the fan controller knob down just ever so slightly then they are completely silent. The LED's are nice and bright too.

One problem I did notice with them is that if I allow the mobo to control the fan speed then the LED's will flicker which I assume is from them not getting enough juice. The solution is to just plug them into a fan controller or to disable motherboard fan control in the BIOS.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Pez, I can't find a Pro 2L LE on svc or directron. Is that whenre you got yours from?

I may just get the two fans and see how they are and then adda controller if it's still loud.

I recently switched my setup around which put my pc closer to me and I can hear it alot more than I use to. That's what lead me to wanting to change out the fans.

Led's flicker because mobos use PWM fan controllers - PWM means power is switched on and off to control the fan speed. LEDs are fast enough to go off and on with the pusles - Inertia keeps the fan going during the off periods.

Some motherboards don't make LEDs flicker such as my Abit KN8 Ultra. I just tried it. What's that called if it doesn't use PWM?

Well Abit mobos can be set to control or not to control one or more of the fans - if NOT controlling, then NO pulses. I don't know of any mobo that uses linear controllers as the components are usually too large. You would have to either use a low-offset voltage regulator chip or a power transistor with heatsink. Most of them only control in one or two steps, not full-range and they usually don't cover the operation and limits of the controllers well (often not at all) in the manuals. For more detail you might have to contact Abit or check in their user forums.

Yeah, the specs look good. I'd like to get a few and they take paypal. I just happen to have some $$ in there that I've been looking to get rid of.

Twofoot,
Did you get your in and installed?
I ordered some and got them today. Mixed feelings. They are definately quieter than the stock antec fans but still a little loud. I'm on the fence about replacing them with something different but probably won't.

I do want to add that Gary w/sidewinder was great to deal with. I wanted to add something to my order at the last minute and he accomodated me with service above and beyond.

eh...those are as quiet as you'll get without sacrificing too much airflow. those are as quiet as my cooler masters (even though I reduce the speeds on mine but not by much) so maybe you should try reducing the speeds by 200 RPM or so.

Yeah, I may heve to get one of those Sunbeam Rheobus's that Galvanized recommended.
The longer I listen to it the more I can tell there's only a slight difference in sound. I do think my antec fan was going bad though. It was loud and had a hint of a "whine". At least with the new fans the sound is a bit lower and the whine is gone.
