fan popped off GeF4Ti4400, should I get another one?

I was backing up some data on my backup hard drive this weekend and I noticed the stock fan/HS on my MSI GeF4Ti4400 (AGP4X) was only hanging by one of the two screws that holds it on. I popped it back in and everything seems fine, but I wonder if I should either:

1. put some AS3 between it and the GPU and secure it better, or

2. just buy another fan and maybe this is the time to upgrade to a better one. If so, where can I find them and what's the best way to install one?

Just to let you know that I plan on keeping this system for a long time and will be building a second computer in February 2004. Thanks for any help.

Does this sound like a good idea?

Is this the same SkaarjMaster who happens to review over at Insite? tee hee.

Personally, I'd get an aftermarket Fansink combo that's a little beefier than the stock stuff (if you can spare the space over your PCI slots). Not only will it cool better, but it should help you out in the long run by allowing better overclocking....I mean afterall, you plan to keep this PC for a while right?

Also, do you have any RAMsinks on this card? If not, picking some up is always a worthwhile investment.

Yes, I'm SkaarjMaster everywhere you see it spelled like that. You'll see my at a lot of UT forums as well as some hardware forums. I decided to keep the same name everywhere, so as to be recognized as such and to make it also easy on myself, hehe.

Anyway, I'm think of getting that fan/HS in the link above and it comes with RAM sinks that I'll probably use as well. How does that plan sound? I really didn't want to get fancy, but wanted something better than the stock since it might be falling off anyway.

Yeah that TT kit would be pretty good. The cooler is probably a bit better than stock (and it's all copper, which is nice) and the RAMsinks look pretty (although memory on the GF4 doesn't really get hot enough for RAMsinks to matter).

You may as well upgrade the cooling if the card runs fine otherwise.

My Ti4400 came with a cooler like that from the manufacturer 😀 Best Data is cool like that apparently.

Oh - and those RAMsinks WILL matter when/if he decides to overclock.

Yes, the reference GF4 Ti cooler looks like that one, but most of them aren't all copper like that one.

Also, RAMsinks make very little difference on all GF4 models. Here's one review:

Exhardware = 15MHz DDR extra with RAMsinks (7.5 x 2)

Here's another where they only get an extra 3 MHz with RAMsinks at Gruntville.

Here's a review of RAMsinks on an ATI 9500 Pro with Infineon memory. They get an extra 9 MHz (4.5 MHz x 2). Infineon memory is also not heat-limited and thus RAMsinks make very little difference.

The only chips which actually make a significant difference is hot-running Samsung memory chips, primarily on the 9700 Pro/9800 non-pro. Many of these Samsung chips also run cooler and don't have as much as an effect (like on the GF4 Ti cards and some Radeons).

FYI, that thing is loud (5000 rpm fan)

I had it on my old Ti4400, never noticed it with 5 vantec stealth fans running in the case. Same goes with the 5500rpm Vantec Iceberq4.

TT says it is 29 dB, which doesn't seem bad to me. The CFM rating for the TT is higher, but Vantec Iceberg shows no dB rating at all in the specs.

Well im running the Iceberq4 on my R9800 and it's not audible. Since the Iceberq4 Pro is what you'll need for the Gf4Ti series, I would imagine it would be a bit louder because of a bigger and faster fan. I still suggest the TT HSF because it comes with enough memory heatinks to cover all of the memory. The memory heatsinks offered by Vantec is only enough for one side.

The Thermaltake fan was louder than the stock fan on the FX5700 Ultra. It's fine as long as you aren't sleeping in the same vicinity as it I guess, but still was a bit loud for me.

Actually, mine is all copper. It's not a reference cooler - you know how some third party manufacturers add their own cooling solution? Well....

And hey - the RAMsinks come with the kit, so, 15 more Mhz stable? Why not?

Got it today and installed it with minimal problems. No loud noises above my other fans and works great!

One odd thing though is I hooked the fans to the 3-pin slot on my video card and nothing, then I turned it around the other way and still nothing. I had to use the extra connector and hook it to one of my spare power supply cords instead. I guess I may have shorted it or something when I first hooked it up to the card, but I hooked it up the way Thermaltake said in their instructions.
