In a Nortel OC192 class today, the instructor said that when this equipment first came out, the fans didn't last long. He said that it was because of the orientation, that is, the fans are mounted horizontally. Fans last a lot longer when they are mounted vertically. That is because the bearings are constantly putting pressure on the race due to gravity in the horizontal configuration. Nortel fixed this problem by going to higher quality fans. They now have Papst fans.
I have a Chrome Orb on my Duron and have decided to put a PEP66 on it instead. After hearing this information, my decision is reinforced. I will not modify it to sit on top, but will get the 10mm fan and keep it orientated vertically. The fan should last a long time then.
If Nortel uses Papst fans on their OC192's, then you know they are about as good as a fan gets for quality.
Does that sound reasonable to you guys?
