"Fan only" 4 pin connector from PSU.

I have Antec 300 case which comes with a 140mm fan. It's antec tri-cool fan but even when I put the speed in its lowest setting, I find it too loud.

I ended up buying a different fan but it makes even more annoying noise due to its being sleeve bearing fan. I was thinking about buying a different fan but I found out something new today.

While assembling friend's setup with new and same Antec 300 case, I noticed it's far more quiet than mine. It was because his fans were attached to "fan only" 12v 4 pin connector from PSU (I don't know what those connectors are called but those are the types that connect to IDE HDDs.)

My understand is that they're undervolted thus the name "Fan Only."
Now, I'm wondering if I could somehow undervolt my 12v 4 pin connector just like his.

His PSU:

Most likely his 4 pin molex connector the voltage is regulated by the power supply depending upon the temps.

I Remember something about people rewiring their 4 pin molex connector and having it suppling 7 volts instead of 12 volts in order to reduce speed and noise but do not know if it would be any better than your lowest setting now should be able to find it using google.

does your and his case use the same fan?

Yes, it's the same fan.
After making the thread, I came across this article:

However, the tri-cool fan only has two wires on the bottom so I guess it's already 5v only. 'IDE power connector' from PSU, also, has only two wires hence 5v only.
