I would just put a few screws in the fan that would put pressure on the fins of the heatsink.

hmm if you screw it to the heatsinc I think you void the warenty but if you glue it(so you can remove it without em noticing) it's ok

Hey, I am thinking of doing this too with this card. I have a nice iceberg fan that I would like to just paste on to the card... but a fan on top of the heatsink might just do... how much are going to overclock? Post your OC when you are done.

On the website they say it WON'T till you remove the stock warranty. I took a fan and strap it on with a tie.. have pics if you wanna see. check the faq on 3dfx

20. If I put a fan on my Voodoo3, will I void my warranty?

No. If you think that your case is not receiving adequate ventilation, feel free to add a small fan (a 486 CPU fan will work fine) to the top of the Voodoo3 heat-sink. The key here is to NOT remove the original heat-sink. This will void your lifetime warranty.

How would you mount a 486 fan on a V3 3k heatsink using screws? It can't be done, the gaps between the fins are way too wide. Use some twisty ties or something, then you won't void the warranty.

Can anyone direct me to some information on different ways of mounting a 486 fan to this card? Thanx

You might also want to remove the heatsink and then re-attach it using heatsink grease. Technically you're voiding the warranty, but how is 3dfx going to know that you changed the thermal interface? I did that, plus I attached a CPU fan to the heatsink running twisty ties through the holes in the card. Then I used some thermal tape and put a heatsink on the back of the card. What's really sad is that I'm not even overclocking (don't get me started on how dumb video card overclocking is), I had to do all this to keep the V3 3k from turning my system into a hot oven.

I've had Voodoo3 2000, MicroStar TNT2, and Elsa Erazor TNT2 Ultra cards that have good heatsinks but either crappy fans or nothing but glue between the heatsink and the chip. With the MicroStar TNT2 and the Elsa Erazor card, I've taken the heatsink off using dental floss, put some thermal compound surronded by a very fine line of super glue and mounted the heatsink on the chip like that. Then, I lightly glued cheap $8.99 4500 rpm fans on the heatsinks. Had to take the cards back, though, so I just popped off the fans from the heatsinks and put the old ones back on.. No one ever knew about the heatsinks.

These twist-ties, are you guys referring to those ties that hold your cables together when you buy a piece of equipment, or is it something different? I'll be using a 486 fan I ordered from Onvia (comes w/heatsink for $3.42 shipped).

yellowperil: Yeah, those little white things work best, but you can use the little things with wire in them you get at the grocery store to tie a plastic bag.

Krazy Glue works great for me. Just make sure you let the glue set long enough first. If you want, you can reinforce it with a tie.

Not dumb at all. As you can see from my sig I'm significantly overclocking my V3 2000. It's not a HUGE boost, but it is a good boost nonetheless. (I get more out of speeding up my CPU however.)

OK, I got the fan on using twist-ties. Is there any way to show the temperature of the V3? I'm also new to overclocking in general, how do I know when the card is getting too hot?

You will most likely start seeing odd shapes and distortions in your images... use Quake III or something similiar and slowly move it up... and eventually you will start seeing distortions quickly... I could not OC much so I just said screw it and kept it essentially normal.

If you read the 3dfx FAQ there is a question like this and they say they don't mind at all if you put a fan on the card.

Hmm, I have one of the newer V3's with SGRAM instead of SDRAM. I hear these don't OC as well and I'm a little apprehensive to try. Can 3dfx tell if you OC'ed your card if you take it in for warranty?

How can they YellowPeril? You don't know even know what overclocking is, remember? ;)
