hey all,

Got one of the Best Buy specials for $99 and have a question..

Everytime I start my computer, the fan on the GF3 card makes a low pitched "whine"
I took the side off the computer case, and by either "tapping" the card or lightly touching the fan blade, the sound goes away...Back to the normal pitched hum of a 40mm fan...
This did not happen the first 2-3 times I turned the machine on after I got the card...but does so now.

I tried reseating the card in the slot and even loosening up the screw on the bracket a hair, but it doesnt work....

any hints???

also, because of a game I play,(Links2001) I have to use the 21.83 drivers...before that, I was using the 22.80 and was overclocking nicely using Coolbits...
Now, since I have to use the WHQL drivers, what utility is suggested for overclocking the card??

thx

I'm sorry but I think it's often the case with a fan on Visiontek's card. I have a Visiontek GF2U and its fan started making both high and low pitched whines soon after I installed the card. I contacted Visiontek Tech Support since the card also exhibited rolling lines and they sent me a replacement. Nothing really changed. The replacement didn't make as much noise at first, but it started making the same sort of noise after a month or so (I don't remember exactly.). I tried greasing the fan but it didn't help. I guess it's because of poor construction of the fan.

I'm now looking for an upgrade for my GF2U, but I stay away from any of Visiontek's offering because of its poor fan.

Your only alternative may be to take out the fan and replace it with any quieter fan, say, a Blue Orb.

As for me, I'll probably buy either Radeon 8500 or Leadtek/Gainward's GF3Ti200 or Gainward GF3 original.
