Fan Monitor on PSU?

I just installed a new PSU and noticed that it had a fan monitor wire on it. My case fan is already connected to the system fan lead on the motherboard. Would it be preferable to connect the PSU to the mobo and hook the case fan to direct power?

Also, are there any applications to monitor the temps and fan speeds without having to run through the setup program on boot?

Thanks.

I am not sure what you are saying for certain, but it sounds like you are saying the PSU has a wire to allow for fan monitoring, rather than a cable that allows you to plug a fan in to monitor it? If so, that cable is used to monitor the PSU's fan speed if you connect it to a motherboard header that supports reading.

Look for motherboard monitor. MBM 5 is the current version I believe.

As far as which fan to monitor (i.e., hook up to 3pin on the mobo), I don't see where it makes a huge difference, some people might say your PS fan because you want to know if that thing goes out or starts acting funny.
