Fan inside a mouse: power issues?

Ok, doing a little mouse mod with my MS intellimouse explorer 3.0. I am going to install a fan on the interior, to blow outward through some holes i made (also made a few intakes). I was planning on powering this very tiny sunon fan I ordered from digikey (25mmx25mmx6mm) directly from the +5v on the ps2 cable. Digikey's info says this fan runs at 5v with .06amps of current. From my knowlege I'd think that the fan then uses 0.3 watts of power. If that is indeed correct, will this overload my motherboard's ps2 port and/or will it interfere with the mouse's function at all? Thanks for your help, just realized the potential for breaking something with this mod.

sorry I can't answer your question, but why would you want a fan in a mouse? that would cause some annoyances.

Word'em up! I just spent $62.50 on "quiet" case fans trying to get my cases quiet. All I really needed to do was remove 3/4's of the fans I had. Did that. CPU/Case temps have barely gone up...and noise has been reduced by four decibels (metered!!!!) and a whole frickin' lot (subjective).

WTH do you want to put a fan inside your mouse? Does your hand get overheated from whacking off looking at pron?

Well, it would be blowing on your hand like in a bowling alley thing. Basically it's mainly to keep busy, my friends work evenings/nights, and I work days.

umm... why?

i've got a ball mouse that uses .3 amps, and an optical that uses .1 amp. so if the MS explorer is as low power as my logitech then you should be able to add it just fine.

Heh, guess nobody likes it when people mess with mice, or just a tough crowd tonight. It's a 21db fan, I can deal with that fine. My pc case is not directly next to me, so I can't hear it and I'm always playing music. It's not a masturbation accessory, just something different in the way of modding.

ElFenix how did you measure the amperage used by your mice? I'm not sure if the explorer has more unecessary components being powered versus the logitech (i'm using a logitech at the moment waiting for the paint on my mouse to dry and the inside of the logitech is much more simplistic).

Congratulations buddy!!! You have taken my acerbic response and skillfully MODDED it into a work of art, earning you a spot in "MichaelD's Quote of the Week" hall of fame. Look below. :) LmAO.

Yeah, I know it sounds stupid and rediculous to do what I am planning to do, but I am not the first. It's just something I do to keep from sitting around and doing nothing during my free time. Nice to keep up on skills involving tools and such.

You are blowing the wrong way. I got excited when I read your post and thought you were going to make a hover mouse like an air hockey table. :D

I was thinking along the lines of hovermouse, too.... that would be really cool on an optical mouse.

"Laser HoverMouse" that is a name that would sell for sure!

A hovermouse would be kind of cool but, if your desk isn't perfectly flat and level, it would probably fly off every time you go to take a leak or something. ;)

Actually I wouldn't mind having a heated mouse in the wintertime. I'll have to keep my eyes open to see if anyone attempts that mod. Hmm, maybe a Firewire mouse would be ideal for that....

Yes, I'm a cheap bastard who won't turn the heat up. :)

Thanks for the links kuk. That meku link is where I got the idea. I wasn't sure however if my optical mouse was drawing more power than his ball mouse, and I didn't want to break anything.

Sorry, but LOL.

Problems:

1. More noise.
2. Mouse will vibrate in your hand, potentially giving you something worse than the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
3. Excessive drinking :)

if it's logitech, then there's a screw near the back at the bottom. since you can't find it, i'll assume you have an MS mouse. There are 4 "slick" pads which make the mouse glide. if you peel those off, the screw holes are below them. hope this helps :)

When you finish this historic project, I assume you will be putting a fan in your keyboard.
