Fan&Heatsink Inquiry...

I just wanted to ask which Fan and Heatsink is the best for cooling an AMD Athlon 64 3400 CPU? I was leaning toward the Thermaltake brand, but if you have a better recommendation, I would like to hear it 🙂 Also, if I were to get an eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800GT Video Card (256MB GDDR3, 256-Bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "256-A8-N344-AX" -RETAIL), do I need to get another additional fan to cool it off because I heard that I might need another one to cool it even more. Also, which thermal paste brand do you recommend? Thanks...

I am waiting for the processor and my computer will be built by the end of this week.

My Specs:

AMD Athlon 64 3400 (Coming on Wed.)
Maxtor 250 GB SATA HD
2-512 DDR 400 Memory Sticks
NEC DVD-R +/- Dual Layer Writer (Coming on Wed.)
DFI LanParty UT nF3 250GB Socket 754 ATX
Video Card (Thinking about it-ATI or nVidia?)
Heatsink and Fan (Looking around)
Monitor (not yet)

Look to Thermalright for a heatsink... I'm trying out the XP-120 right now, and it's doing fairly well. Of course, many people here will tell you that I'm insane in my desired temps. Right now, while burning a dvd, I'm getting 35-36C on the processor and 32C case temp. To me, that's still a bit above my goal (10F above room/ambient temp is my goal) while having a system that cannot be heard from over 5' away. If I can't get closer to my goal within a month of using this configuration (I've tried the fan blowing onto the heatsink, not I have it sucking off of it) then I'll be taking a good hard look at liquid cooling... I want to JUST cool the processor, nothing else, since that has the loudest fan inside my rig at present.

As for thermal compound, get Arctic Silver Ceramique.

For your video card, look at the Arctic Cooling product and just install that. I'm using it on that same card, and it's cooling it well.

the loud booming voices of the forum will tell you thermalright xp-90 or xp-120 (if it fits), the second loudest saying zalman 7000b (alcu - all copper is scary) or 7700 (if it fits), then a less loud but still audible voice will tell say swiftech hsf's

For what that vid card costs, you'd shouldn't have to change the fan!

You do realize that as soon as you remove the heatsink, you void your warranty, right? 😉

I'd wait a while before I removed the HSF from my $390 card...
