Fan Headers

I spent the morning transferring my K6-2/FIC 503+ system into a nice shiny new Fong Kai 320. The system had originally resided in an AT case with AT power supply. In addition to moving the system to the new case, I also "tweaked" it a little. I rounded the IDE and Floppy cables and gathered up the extra wire from the heat sink fan. I put a cable tie around this extra cable and carried on with my work. When I tried to boot my system, I couldn't get a POST. No beeps, no nothing. I stripped my system down to CPU and memory and still couldn't get it to work. As a last resort, "it couldn't possibly matter" solution, I unbundled the fan cabling and BINGO the system booted.

Has anyone had any similar experiences like this? As an additional thought, when I started adding case fans, I tried using the additional header on the MB to run a 60mm fan. My system would not boot with the additional fan on the MB and I ended up powering it off of a standard molex connector. Is it unusual for the FIC 503's to be sensitive to voltage drops from accessories like fans? Also, how could bundling the extra fan cable cause an increased voltage drain sufficent to stop the boot process? Finally, the new case has a 300watt 10amp power supply, whouldn't that overcome any such problems? Any thoughts would help....
