Fan controller possible for GPU fan?

So I am looking to quiet my system down, and my GPU fan is the 2nd loudest fan I have. Since I am planning to replace all my case fans/cpu fans, I am wondering about the GPU.

I posted in the Cases and Cooling section, and someone brought up a fan controller.

Since I don't want physically modify anything, I am refraining from going to an aftermarket setup. Is there any way I can use a fan controller, and hook that up to the GPU fan? I never thought of it, I just didn't think it would work, as it usually applies to only case fans.

Well, has this been done?

Thanks.

A fan controller is a variable resistor that is placed in the current path of the fan. It can be used to reduce the speed of any fan; case, CPU or GPU.

What you should consider is that reducing the speed of a fan decreases its cooling capability. So, you should only do this if you can tolerate higher temperatures.

Sometimes, replacing the whole cooler improves the cooling efficiency, which allows reducing the fan speed without paying a heat penalty.
