Fan Control on GA-B85M-D3H

Hey guys,

I built a PC (first time) with a GA-B85M-D3H motherboard. My case (NZXT Source 210) came with a rear exhaust fan and I purchased an additional 120mm fan which I'm using as a front intake fan.

If you look at the layout of the mobo, you can see the places to plug in case fans: SYS_FAN1, SYS_FAN2, SYS_FAN3. I have the exhaust fan plugged into FAN1, and the front intake fan plugged into FAN3.

In my BIOS, the system fans have the options of Normal (automatic), silent (low speed), full speed, or disabled I believe. I have both fans set to "Normal" setting, which controls the fans automatically.

Here is my problem: while the exhaust fan is always spinning, the intake fan only spins when the computer has a heavy load (like while I'm gaming). When I'm just using my computer lightly, like browsing the web, the intake fan doesn't spin, but it does this weird thing where it twitches every couple seconds.

I want the fans to spin at similar speeds so that there is better airflow, even if they don't spin that fast. While I'm happy that both fans work well while I'm gaming, I'd rather have the fans run at speeds similar to each other all of the time.

I'm not sure how I can fix this since I have the fan control set to automatic essentially. I downloaded an application by Gigabyte called EasyTune which I thought would allow for better fan control but there was no fan control in the version I downloaded. Also, I would rather not use a third party application to control fan speeds but I am open to suggestions.

Do you guys think that since I plugged the intake fan into "SYS_FAN3" and skipped "SYS_FAN2" it could have an effect on the way the fan runs? I'm not sure that the fan cable will reach the FAN2 location.

Thank you in advance for any help. :)

I would get a fan splitter cable and run both fans off one header.

FWIW, I never had very good luck using the SYS_FAN headers on my GB boards... I could never get them to work quite right. I use a manual controller.

Thank you for the advice.

Are there any applications you would recommend for manual control?

Well, I'm talking about an actual physical knob-type controller. My case came with one, I use it to run all the case fans.

I don't know of a specific program that actually 'runs' your fans... but I'm sure they are out there.

And I'm with you on EasyTune... the only thing I use it for is the voltage monitor... nothing else.

If you`re using a 4 prong PMW Fan Controller Header off the the MB for either the CPU or GPU you require PMW Fans which are Profiled in BIOS Settings for the CPU and Software for the GPU but neither carries enough current to run more then 2 PMW Fans: in other words, if you using more then 2 Fans to cool either the CPU or GPU just use 3 prong Fans through a 12-7-3v Sx or rheostat high current Manual Fan Controller feed directly from the from the PSU and use something like Hardware Monitor Pro to note the Temps.

I appreciate all of the advice guys!

I actually don't have access to my PC right now but I learned that Gigabyte moved their fan control software to their app called "System Information Viewer". So when I get the chance I will try that out.
