Simple question:
I have the "alarm on fan failure" thingee set in my BIOS (F5 rev of a Giga Ds3L). I figure, if for some reason the [stock] fan goes out, I want to know about it.
But I also have variable fan speed set, since I don't really overclock, and I don't do a ton of processor intensive stuff, so if the system can be quiet, I want it to be quiet.
Here's the problem: When my computer boots up, either from sleep or cold (literally), that alarm goes off for a minute or two, until I either just let it last long enough, or I tax the processor enough to start generating some heat (VM Ware is a good bet for this). Is there some setting where the alarm doesn't go off it the temp is below a certain threshold? Is this a common problem? Am I making any sense? I just assume that the variable speed fan isn't running at all because the CPU is cold when I first turn the computer on, and the alarm says "EGADS, NO FAN, YOU ARE GOING TO DIEEEEEE!". Which is kind of a silly system.
Does anyone have any bright ideas for this sort of thing? I'm tempted to just turn off the fan alarm, or at least turn it off during the winter, but I'm afraid I'll forget, and I would like to have some sort of fan notice in case it really does die. I don't want to fry my chip (C2D e7200, in case you were curious).
Thanks!
