Foolishly whilst taking off a three pin fan header plug so I could sleeve the cable I didn't make a note of the order and they're not coloured. It is a question of which way round they should be. When I searched I found at least one contradictory picture, used on several web sites for the 3 pinouts which threw me.

My own testing using a battery shows that one is +, one is - (GND) and the other is ? but apparently for RPM reporting.

The sequence most commonly shown, from the back of the header plug and corresponding to MB header pins 1 - 3 from left to right, is:-

Pin 1 = GND (usually black where coloured wires are used)

Pin 2 = 5v/12v (usualy red where coloured wires are used)

Pin 3 = RPM (usually yellow where coloured wires are used)

This is the particular page that made me decide to check here.

The diagrams show the order as above but the photo shows what must be the RPM wire in (2) and the red 5v/12v wire in (3).

I'm fairly certain the photo is misleading but the diagrams are correct. However I thought I'd just just better check here that the correct order from left to right is indeed GND, 5v/12v and RPM.

Yup, its order resemble Germany's flag. I'm certain that the first picture in that link is wrong as it then provided a drawn version below it with the correct order.
