The owners of Harry Caray's Restaurant bought the baseball that was deflected by a fan during the Cubs' playoff loss to Florida-- a move they say will help bring closure to one of the most agonizing losses in the team's history.
The ball was bought for $106,600 at auction early Friday, the winning bid coming from Grant DePorter, managing partner of Harry Caray's Restaurant group, which owns three Chicago-area locations and also runs a catering business.
"When we heard this thing was going to be auctioned off, we felt like it was going to be a trophy that was going to rubbed in Cubs fans' noses," DePorter said. "We weren't about to let it get into the hands of a Marlins fan."
