If you have really good writing skills, you could pull it off. Think, "I'm a fun-loving guy who likes to play around, read up on obscure stuff, and donate ludicrous amounts of money to my alma mater when I graduate."

However, you're probably better off with a different opener.

Yeah, if you could tie that quote into your topic somehow. But just using it to be different or offbeat without any relevance to your essay might be something you want to stay away from.
