Everyone understands brian I think, but I don't know about Stewie.

i remember there was an episode, and in the end aliens were watching them and one asked "so whats the deal with the baby, can they understand him or what?" (or something to that extent).. made me lol... heh

some people can understand stewie, but i dont think the main family can.

Everyone can understand Brian, but I think only Brian can understand Stewie. The rest of the family seems to sort of understand him sometimes, but I thnk they're just hearing baby talk.

this seems to make the most sense and is pretty much how i look at it.
though, i think if a joke need for someone to understand him, i doubt the writers would really give a damn.
usually, though, i think the adult responses to him are so generic they could be based on body language and tone of "baby noises."
other kids can understand the baby.

They can understand both Brian and Stewie. Seth McFarlane confirmed this. They dismiss most of it since he's a baby.

i remember in the one episode that was about stewie's birthday, the "man in the white robe" seemed to understand stewie.

Well they definitely understand Brian, but I think with Stewie they just understand his emotions... though occasionally they react a little to specifically to the things he says.

i didn't think they could really understand stewie, but in a 4th season episode when louise stumbled into stewie's hidden weapon room, she was like "i should've listened to all the stuff he said, i thought he was just being a baby " or something along that line.

I thing they understand what Stewie says, but they think he's being a young child who doesn't mean what he says or is too emotionally immature to understand what he's saying actually means.
