EATONTOWN, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey family whose terrier-pit bull mix escaped from their backyard during Superstorm Sandy went to an animal shelter this week to adopt a new pet and came home with their old dog.

Chuck James tells The Associated Press that his family searched for the brown-and-white dog named Reckless for months after the October 2012 storm before finally giving up hope.

Heartworming story, indeed. 😉

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for these folks and for their pup, but I do have two ancillary takeaways:

1. Pet dogs really do come to resemble their owners!

2. Seriously pudgy NJ family lives in EATONTOWN!

lol

man even the young daughter (what 8 yrs old?) looks fat! how fucking sad.

though happy for the dog. i'm sure he is well fed....

lol yeah i know. just amazes me that people allow it.

I think it makes them feel better about themselves. Get the kid good and fat and then they can say "see, obesity runs in the family, it's a curse" rather than winching their cinnabon-laden asses off the sofa to get some exercise.

"Hey a hurricane is coming. Think we should bring in the dog?"

"naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah he'll be ok"

ftfy

Or maybe they just let the dog out to pee and didn't notice part of the fence was down. Dogs get out. Chipping makes sure if they get picked up they can find the owner even if the collar gets lost.

Maybe the owner should y'know, WALK THEIR DOG during a hurricane instead of opening the door. Cuz you know, maybe part of the fence got blown down or something.

yeah!? maybe there shouldn't be a fucking hurricane when people are trying to walk the dog!

you are wrong. she is close to 8...this article has her at 10..

James said the family had planned in recent weeks to get a new dog as a 10th birthday surprise for their eldest daughter, Ally

I imagine he was talking about the younger girl in the aqua shirt, and didn't see the older girl crouching behind her parents. I didn't see her at first either.

Actually, it's kind of a weird picture with mom and dad almost completely obscuring their daughter...

definitely avoid trees. walk them around the backyard or someshit.

point: leaving your animal unattended in your backyard for any amount of time during a hurricane is not a good idea

i think this goes to show that we need to ban hurricane's.

i gotta think a hurricane is kinda like in a tornado in that when we think we might have a tornado we get in the basement WITH the fucking animals.

Really, what I want to know is who buys used dogs? New ones are cheap.
Is this one of those hipster things like buying used pants and drinking out of jars?

I'm glad they went to a shelter looking for a new dog but, why didn't they check the shelter when they were trying to find their dog in the first place?
