Family Computer Crashing!

OK i am using the family PC atm as im building my own as you all would know!

and way i play games and stuff and the computer turns off withou a sign, i turn it back on but it fails to re-boot then i wait 10 min and it works fine again the core temp is 78 degress C and a mate has suggested putting a big fan in it

ATM i have taken both side panels off the case and it still crashes!

and ideas? it seems to only have 1 fan on the mobo!

what do you guys think is causing these random crashes and what should i do?

want me to post a pic of insides?

Can you provide specs on the system?

The temperature is quite high, and could be the problem, but mobo sensors are notoriously unreliable. You could try cleaning and remounting the cpu fan with new thermal paste, but if it only happens during games, my first two guesses would be video card drivers, and power supply.

the specs are

Intell Pentium 4 3.2 GHz
Gigabyte Mobo
512mb ram
80Gig HD
7inch Screen
radeon 9250
liteOn dvd burner

i have opened the case and have a aircon running on it and its now at 58 Degrees celcus

but mabey if i had more fans it would work?

Um 78C is like not very cool n stuff. Something is not right there. Almost sounds as if your Heatsink is not seated right. I'd pop that bad boy off, clean it, apply some new thermal paste and see what happens. ALso check that the fan is plugged in and running.

Is the compy on top of a desk or in a cabinet?

its ontop of a desk and its upstairs and its only got 1 fan situated on the mobo apart for the powersuply fan

ya, the heatsink isnt sitting right or the fan doesnt work at least maybe there is a ton of dust packed in it.

ill have to check it
but if i take of the heatsink and i put t back on with out "thermal paste" is that bad? i dont have any "thermal paste"

Get some paste, check the heatsink for dust and make sure its seated correctly, check the paste on the CPU if there is any, if its all hard and crusty replace it. I recommend arctic silver 5.

If it didnt reboot before and its only started doing it recently then it probably is dust or the pastes gone all crusty. If the heatsink wasent seated correctly it wouldve been rebooting from day 1. Unless you removed it and didnt put it back on correctly.

i havent touched anything since my cousin built it

and do i ahve to use paste? can i just check for dust and put it back on?
