Fam RPM, 3pin connector and amp draw..

I have an 80mm cpu fan that uses a 4pin peripheral type connector. I would like to use a 3pin converter to plug into the mobo so the bios can controll the RPMs. Does anybody know if that would work the way I want it to? Also, the fan has a max amp draw of .45 amps but would probably operate at half that most of the time, would that be acceptable to run of the mobo connector?

That's about 6 watts and I wouldn't try it if it were mine, unless the motherboard's documentation specifically says how much wattage/amperage the headers will take. Also, are you certain that the motherboard's BIOS can, in fact, control the fan speed? Is it an Asus board with Q-Fan, perhaps?

Yes, its an Asus SK8V. The opteron processor runs crazy hot..

Really? 😕 How hot? Is the heatsink definitely making full contact with the CPU heatspreader? The heatsink receiver is fully screwed down? Or are you using a heatsink/fan unit that doesn't use the receiver?

typicall runs about 115F at 2000rpms

115F load? That's about 45C, right?
If that's a load temp, you're doing OK for not having a heavy, expensive HSF (@2k RPMS, anyway).
Given the power draw, you probably shouldn't use the mobo, I'd second mechBgon on that.

Aight sounds good.. Thats the biggest heaviest heatsink ive seen.. IF it weighed any more i wouldnt feel safe putting it on the mobo..

Thermalright and Zalman have heavier.
Before you don't feel safe about installing them, take out the bracket they attach to and try bending it.
I'd be leary w/ my XP, but a A64 or Opteron...2lb coolers will be fine. 🙂
