Ok I bought a TV Ator from Antec which claims it can do 1280x1024 resolution (yes I know it does an uderscan method of some sort) @ 75hz and 16.7 million colors (32bit right correct me if I am wrong)
Specs will follow this
Ok so I hook up the device and start to use it, works pretty good small text looks ok...
I put it to 800x600 and it still looks good. Started to notice some colorbanding though so I checked to make sure I was set to 32 bit and I was...hmmmmmmm
I popped in a DVD and started to watch using win DVD. BAD COLOR BANDING NOW!
Ok I though to my self, I'll just pop in my hollywood plus DVD Decoder card and try it out, same result, then tried a different video card...same problem...and another video card...same problem even tried different drivers, resolutions, refresh rates etc.
Games, title bars it doesnt matter all had color banding.
So I took back te tvator and exchanged it for another thinking it was defective, It did the same dang thing.
So I e-mail antec and they ask me to call I get voice mail for several days and finally get ahold of someone and start to talk about this problem, well my 3yr old sone ends up hanging up the phone accidentally and when I call back I get voicemail. So I e-mail and get a responce back here is the e-mail

Joshua,

Regarding your TVAtor inquiry, he maximum resolution of a TV is 320 X 240.
I recommend making your PC resolution to enhance what you see on your TV
screen. Also, the TVator is not really designed for viewing movies from
your PC dvd drive. Thanks for your understanding.

end e-mail

Ok I thought I remember seeing that the maximum resolution on tv is like 640x480 or something and what would the resolution have to do with the color depth..32bit at 320x240 is still 32bit at 1024x768 right?
Even stil a regular DVD plays at like 720x480 and still has excellent color depth....

Dont get me wrong I like it so far its great to be able to do so much on a big screen but the fact that they say several times on the box, web site etc 16.7 million colors when it doesnt display 16.7 million, maybe 65k colors (16-bit)
Color banding on ames is annoying but wen you try to play a dvd movie and get it ICK! So now I have to go trough and unplug the tvator and switch to the hollywood plus card. I would use my set top dvd player but it is a pos oritron elcheapo model and audio goes out of sync all the time!

What might be happening is you trying to stretch a 1280x1024 desktop to your tv screen resolution. I know my laptop would do that when I tried to make the screen resolution really high and display it on my tv.

I am currently running the resolution at 800x600 I have tried to run it at 640x480 as well and still get colorbanding, also have tried a 19" tv and composite connections, still colorbanding! TV Output on Video cards dont do that..
