Fallout Tactics is a pretty cool RTS game based on the Fallout RPG series. It's totally different from a gameplay standpoint, but fun none the less.

Not very fun ... muddled movement erased the fun for me. I was so pumped when it came out, and it lasted less than a week on my drive. :|

Aside from the combat system (and post-apocalyptic setting), I found very little that was similar to the RPGs. Small unit tactics (think X-Com or Jagged Alliance, but not as good, in my opinion). Throw in some vehicles and fairly linear maps, and you have Tactics. It just didn't grab me like the originals. But if you've got time, and enjoyed the combat of the first two, then I suggest trying out 2-3 levels. I _think_ I quit playing after I accidentally backed over a teammate, without having recently saved the game =) Or some other equally stupid move.

Edit: After reading back through the Gamespot review, I might have to dig it out and give it another shot. Take my preceeding paragraph as the ramblings of a disillusioned Fallout fanboy.

It was fun in pure turn based mode (like FO 1-2). It's essentially a set of missions rather than role-playing but it still uses skills, perks, etc. (except targeted shots are much less powerful than in FO2).

A better turn-based, squad-level tactical combat RPG is Jagged Alliance 2 since the combat is more refined and detailed. JA2 is closer to X-Com than Fallout but is very fun.

I did'nt like it. I was hoping it would be more like X-Com but it turned out to be your standard level to level squad game.

Fallout tactics sucked. Unless you are a HUGE fallout junky then steer clear of it. I loved Fallout 1+2, but tactics just felt like a half-assed attempt at a strategy game based on the system.

Well, JA2 was the best game of that type ever made by far, so not being as good is pretty much a given ;p

X-Com was probably 2nd, but keep in mind many people's memories of it are affected by it being new and original at the time.

FO:tactics was pretty mediocre compared to it's predecessors - fans of the rpg are unlikely to be interested as the things that made FO1/2 great ( story, interactivity, multiple paths, multiple solutions, character voice acting etc ) are almost entirely absent from tactics, and fans of X-Com/JA2 are usually disappointed that the tactical combat isn't up to scratch.

That being said, I still had fun with it.

I <3 X-Com Apocalypse. I still have two copies here, and managed to get it working again a few months ago. Most people I've run into, though, thought it was an inferior successor to the original two.

I tried JA, and got my ass handed to me. I quickly gave up.
