I picked up New Vegas and 3 during the Steam sale -- are these games that can be jumped right into, or is there a background storyline from the earlier games that I should explore first?

If this sounds like an ignorant question, it is :\ -- admittedly this is my first foray into an RPG.

The Fallout series shares common themes and has recurring character types and items that earlier fans would recognize. However, each game has a self-contained storyline so just jump in wherever and have fun. The Fallout games are great, enjoy

Agreed pretty much all they share now are similar mechanics. Hop in and get to having some fun! Also don't get sidetracked by all the DLC when you pop out the vault in FO3

Yeah they intentionally made the games to where you don't have to know the series in intimate detail to enjoy each game. This is great for beginners. There's enough interplay though with the older games so the seasoned Fallout vet will appreciate them too. I thought the DLC for NV did an excellent job at this, more-so on average than the DLC for 3.

the one thing about the dlc, is for New vegas, they do tie into the main story line but are fun by themselves too, where as the ones for fallout 3 then to be more standalone

Yup just jump right in. Dont even need to play fallout 3 before new vegas as the two arent really related much although the gameplay is very similar. Both excellent games. Ive never played the previous fallout games and it dosent hinder playing fallout 3 or new vegas.

Like everybody else said, you don't need to know anything about previous Fallout's to play Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Though I would still recommend playing Fallout 1 & 2 which can be picked up at GOG for 50% off. They are classics in every sense of the word and they are better games than FO3 and NV.

I was planning to -- I just grabbed the newer ones sooner because of the Steam sale...

One last question -- the initial Steam installation for Fallout 3 attempted to add x64 .NET 3.0, but failed -- I keep getting a red splat telling me to "turn Windows features on or off in Control Panel", but no matter what I disable, it won't install. Won't install the 32-bit one either. These are in the ..\SteamApps\common\Fallout 3 goty\DotNetFX folder. Running Windows 7 x64 Pro.

I did already have the .NET 4.0 client running, and the game seems to launch and play okay regardless.

I had the same error when installing FO3 the other day. Game plays just fine for me as well regardless of that.

If you want both, I'd suggest playing Fallout 3 first because once you play New Vegas you won't be able to go back. It's better in many ways and less buggy in my experience too.

FO3 is still worth playing though, that's why I say to play it first. They barely tie into each other at all; in fact, FO3 doesn't make a whole lot of sense from a lore standpoint, whereas New Vegas is fairly consistent with the older games.

There's enough variety within stock weapons that I never feel the need to buy weapon DLC. I'd stick to the packs themselves. You get interesting guns in them, especially with Old World Blues.
