Fallout: NV - Hardcore Mode Worth It?

According to the wiki, you can get a special item at the end of the game if you play the whole thing on Hardcore (never disable it).

Or you could just add the item by console command and forget about it.

If you've played FO3 already I'd suggest playing the game on Hard or even Very Hard difficulty since at least on Very Hard the game gives you access to better guns.

Hardcore is separate from that: you must eat and drink, you can be crippled, gun ammo has weight, and companions can die. I haven't wanted to bother with all of that so said no to it.

Non-spoiler tips:
- Dealer stock is replenished once a week(?) and is somewhat random. This can be a problem if you're looking for specific weapon mods like silencers. If you ever see a sniper rifle silencer, buy it right then!
- Look at clothing effects - if like me you put almost no points into Barter then finding a roving trader hat and outfit gives you +10 to Barter. Keeping a Wasteland Doctor outfit lets you add +5 medical when needed.
- Take the perk for an extra +2 skill points / level (educated?) ASAP, then the perk for doubling the effect of magazines and gaining +1 from skill books. Save your skill books until you get the second perk. Skill books are much more rare than in F03 and the magazines only give you a temporary boost.
- Look up the ingredients for Weapon Repair Kits and never sell those ingredients, repair kits will save you thousands of caps over having people repair things and using weapons you could sell as repair items.

Back in my day, there was no other option but hardcore.

^ yeah, I remember needing to have food in some of the Ultimas, and having my party starve to death in Realms of Arkania. It was annoying, not fun.

his stuff was pretty funny even if a bit overdone, wonder why it's not linked here near as much anymore.

After 3 years even I am tired of it.
And I used to laugh my balls off every time I watched his reviews. But its mostly just the same old rants with a slightly different vocabulary each time. Once a week was too frequent. But back when he started you better believe no one would settle for once a month.

Just watched Yahtzees latest.

Its funny they play ads before the video starts and have loads of ads on the bottom and sides, for games he's about to ass rape.

links to these funny reviewers? i have a life and can't really keep up on all these goings ons

I played for about 10 hours when the game was released, haven't touched it since. I did play in Hardcore mode and it's pretty laughable - in those 10 hours I never once ate or drank anything specifically for the purpose of 'preventing hunger/thirst' and yet there were no ill effects. I forgot it was even on, it does next to nothing so the choice is yours.

basically this. at first it was awesome because it was very fresh. but after a while the honeymoon effect wore off and his reviews, while still perfectly valid, lost their charm.

i think AVGN lost his charm too. but there is only so much one can do without changing into something different. i prefferd his reviews of consoles but he does so many Nes games its a bit stale and seems like he's doing a chore rather than passion.

Consensus says: no hardcore mode.

Thanks all! Once I finish up Mass Effect, I'm diving into this game. Then it'll be Mass Effect 2. Should be an epic 100 hours of gaming coming my way 🙂

I played on hardcore mode and don't really think it's worth it. It doesn't really add any challenge because food, drink, and doctor's bags/hydra are easy to come by. It's just a nuisance.

I played through on hardcore and didn't really notice it. The effects of dehydration (which are the only ones you'll really feel) aren't that bad until the later stages. And, if you find a clean drinking fountain, you can constantly replenish it. Health and sleep were about the same.

The only real difference was the stim packs not being instant.

This thread caused me to re-evaluate playing on hardcore, so I looked up what you get for it, and no, it is definitely not worth it, especially on the PC. You get nothing to use in game, and no extra content, endings, etc.

So I disabled it and realized it was 90% of what was annoying me about playing New Vegas. Dehydration, Food, and Fatigued don't make the game any more difficult, just more tedious when you are walking around and all of a sudden you loose 10% of your carry weight because of dehydration. EDE dying every other battle also sucked. Also, I saved about 45lb of carrying capacity due to ammo.

So yeah, disable it.

Part way through my regular playthrough, I thought about Hardcore, and when the interface is such a pain in the ass, I laughed and was so happy I was playing on regular mode.

I'm doing hardcore, because I liked the idea. It doesn't do much at all ingame however, but at least in my head I'm pretending I need food/drink/sleep and I'm pretending to myself.

I played hardcore, albiet on 360. Didn't really find it to be tedious or overly intrusive. Though it might be a bit overwhelming if you haven't played FO3.

As long as you collect waters, food, and doctor's bags along the way, it doesn't add much more trouble. The most "annoying" part is the weight assigned to the ammo. In hardcore, you really can't lug around more than 3-4 kinds of ammo, especially explosive stuff.

If you're the type that just wants to roll through the game, don't play hardcore. Hardcore is more for people who like to roleplay or immerse themselves into the game. I thought it was kind of neat, but I turned it off second play through.

All you get is an achievement, at least on the 360 and PS3. Seriously, that's it.. When a game says "reward" I expect something cooler than a stupid achievement.
