Fallout: New Vegas vs. Fallout 3

So, i like fallout 3 but i generally hate games with dark atmospheres. I've heard that Fallout: NV is brighter/has more color. I've also heard it's more upbeat/less creepy. Is any of this true?

Hmm, I would say yes. It is a little brighter due to Vegas specifically, plus the ground is a brighter yellow/orange rather than the drab greys that FO3 is (not that I mind that either). There are also fewer creepy spots imo, though there are still some.

Both games are utterly fantastic. If you liked FO3 you need NV 🙂

Probably true. The Strip is certainly brighter than anything in FO3. They are both great games though, if you like one you'll like the other.

I've played The Pitt, Broken Steel and Point Lookout. The Pitt was so-so. Broken Steel is good just because it raises the level cap and adds some new content. Point Lookout was the best DLC though. Huge new area (that you can go back and forth to unlike the current FO:NV DLC), good story and new enemies. Wait until you have a high level character to tackle Point Lookout though, because the enemies there are a total bitch.

I didn't try Operation Anchorage or Mothership Zeta.

Point Lookout >>> Broken Steel > The Pitt > Operation Anchorage > Mothership Zeta imo. I didn't feel like the aliens from MZ really fit the FO theme, and Operation Anchorage bugged out on me so many freaking times... as did The Pitt. They're fun, but save often. At this point I wouldn't go out of my way for any of them except Point Lookout and Broken Steel, but the GotY edition is relatively cheap now.

Point Lookout was awesome on its own, but it "sucked" in that it didn't really fit into the regular Fallout environment.

It was nice to be able to use all of your own equipment though. The Pitt was weird.

The only thing that bothered me about Point Lookout was getting my ass handed to me by Cletus with shotgun while I'm wearing Tesla armor and firing a plasma rifle.

Would you say F:NV is worth ~$15? are the bugs on ps3 all fixed up yet?

Man, I wish I had a nice gaming pc again for games like this.

It's still to this day worth whatever I paid for the collector's edition ($80?), imo.

I deem them both good, although being an avid fan of Fallout 2 it seems like New Vegas captured a little bit more of that same feel than did 3. As for the DLC, I've gotten through most of the F3 DLC and Dead Money for NV creeps me the hell out, so I got my money's worth out of it and have ignored it since.

There are bug issues with NV, however, and sometimes they're fatal ones. It's something to keep in mind if you're wanting to buy it today, it may be better to wait for a GOTY edition just so they can get it ironed out as much as possible.

NV was a buggy mess on the 360, I still have incomplete missions on my docket that I cannot complete due to glitches in the game. I got trolled endlessly by the deathclaw promonary. I honestly didn't even bother finishing the game and I absolutely loved Fallout 3 and played it through 4 times just for a frame of reference. NV fixed none of the bugs and if anything was 10x buggier than FO3. I give Bethesda a lot of leeway because I love their games but this one just left a sour taste in my mouth.

So do you think the bugs will all get patched? Is the GOTY gonna come out anytime soon? Likely to fall below $15 anytime soon?

I just dont wanna get this, even for $15, if its frustrating because of bugs and then a GOTY pops up lol.

Obsidian originally said they wanted eight DLC's for New Vegas, and only one is out now, so a GotY edition is quite a ways away. I can't comment on the current state because I haven't played it in a while.

I never ran into any major bugs in FO:NV that prevented me from completing the game. I played it after a few major patches were released and really had no major issues aside from a few freezes.

Do you guys think its essential that i play FO3 GOTY? I only have vanilla FO3 and i liked it a lot, but am getting bored of the world having beaten it a couple times. Would it be worth the trouble for me to sell vanilla FO3 and buy FO3 GOTY? Are the DLCs really really fun?

I only ever had minimal bugs in New Vegas. I loved certain aspects of the game. It was definitely harder than FO3. And I'm sure all of those who played it can join me in saying this ... fucking cazadores.

While we are on this subject, I am new to this genre of games. I have Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion GOTY Edition, Fallout 3 GOTY Edition and Fallout 3:New Vegas.

Should I just play them in order? Any advice for someone new to these kinds of games?

Oblivion has nothing to do with the Fallout games; they're completely different universes.

Fallout 3 and Fallout NV don't have to be played in any specific order - NV isn't a direct sequel to FO3.

so is there a sequence that you have to play the dlc on fo3? thinking of getting it since everyone is talking about it now.
