Fallout: New Vegas - Fall 2010

Trailer just came out, its about two minutes long max so it doesn't reveal that much. I'm excited to at least see more about it as we've not seen actual gameplay yet. I hope Obsidian's got some moves with that engine, because that was basically the main thing that kept me from really enjoying Fallout 3.

I'm curious though, how long have they been working on it? For it to come out in Fall 2010 they must have been at it since close to the time FO3 came out. I can't imagine them going that fast on it unless it's been for a lot longer than the game has been known to the public. Either that or it's going to be a trainwreck and there's not much to it.

Did anyone see that Obsidian is collaborating with Jorge "Oscuro" Salgado, the fellow who made the awesome Oblivion mod Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul? Now they just need Martigen, haha. But what could they be using him for? Is it to make an already good game even cooler, or did they cave in and bring in a community expert to help them clean up a mess they made with the engine? Too much uncertainty right now, but I want to see more.

Sounds good. I loved Fallout 2 and 3 so I will be looking forward to picking this up.

However, you fail because you didn't link the trailer 😛 (kidding)

Yeah, there is a lot of unanswered questions with the direction of this game. One is obviously what could be going on in Vegas? According to the wiki they will release offical info on the game in this months Xbox Magazine.

Fallout 3 has no connection with Fallout: Las Vegas except for being in the Fallout universe.

in all likelihood, Fallout: Las Vegas might have story related to Fallout 1 / 2 since the games are relatively close in location

The New California Republic flag is in the trailer. Wonder if that means it's going to have some link to Fallout 2.

I hope they fix a lot of what's wrong in Fallout 3 but seeing as the expansions were still terrible it's not looking good.

Hopefully you won't be able to rely so heavily on VATS in this one. That was my only complaint about Fallout 3... it was way too easy because you were constantly in slow-motion.

most of the complaints I read about Fallout 3 gameplay was either due to people playing Fallout 3 like a FPS instead of a RPG and people bull rushing through the storyline and then complaining about game length.

personally, I think the issue is more about how they played the game, although I wouldn't mind a better main story.

My main complaints were terrible voice acting and side quests that you didn't care about. Both which are very important in this type of game and both in which it failed horribly short at.

I disagree, I think the voice acting was fine, and I played and enjoyed a lot of side missions.

I thought the UI was just awful. Made it a pain to do simple things. I did like Fallout 3 more than I expected, given my dismal opinion of Oblivion. Would not have bought it (got given it as a gift). I cross my fingers for F:LV.

The most positive news for me, is that some of the really top notch modders, Oscuro here, are getting picked up to do pro work.

The side quests I did were awesome, but the main quest was mostly dull. Voice acting was actually solid (500x better than Oblivion) but the character animations were BRUTAL. Ugh, so awful looking... and there's little to no chance of that being any better I assume in New Vegas.

Getting that perk that recharged your VATS if you got a kill was awesome / complete bullshit. I could use pretty much any gun I wanted at that point and was essentially invincible. That was fun for a while and I explored the entire map, but it would be nice to have something more challenging.

I expected some game-play footage from the teaser, it's actually quite a lame teaser, it certainly isn't teasing me. I'll wait for actual game-play videos to come out then it might nourish my interest. But it might end up being quite similar to Fallout 3 anyway, which wouldn't be bad at all, I might pick it up eventually especially if the G.E.C.K. editor works with it (being the same engine and all, it might be the case).

I would normally agree with this, but I couldn't stand the engine's microstuttering and played with the fix for that which also makes the game speed depend on the framerate. That made the game go at double speed during many fights and some of them, especially earlier in the game, would have been too hard without VATS. Although the heavier fights often went at half speed instead. 😛

I liked Fallout 3 a lot overall though. The gameplay was reminiscent of Deus Ex in many ways and the side quests were interesting and had plenty of variety, even though the main quest became silly halfway through the game.

New Vegas isn't even made by Bethseda. Obsidian is the one doing all the work on the game. It uses the same engine as fallout 3, but they have made some adjustments. Gameplay is also altered a bit, but the core parts of the game are still there. I've been told it's more akin to the originals and more fun than 3, but the opinion of person that told me this may be a wee bit biased. Though I also normally trust his opinion, especially for RPGs.

I loved Fallout 3 and hope this is more like 3 than 1 or 2(haven't played the first 2, but don't care for the top/side down gametype). If it is FPS-like, I'll be getting it for sure.

Didn't use VATs much, just on occasion to help through some tough parts. Over XMas I showed a Nephew the game and he was Playing through it and did the Space Mission early(Level 6). After completing that and having the Alien Weapons the Game became super easy. Even without Power Armor I was able to roam through Super Mutant areas of DC with hardly a care(died a couple times not paying attention, but otherwise their bluster was met with demise).

very stoked about this.
If you guys dont know, Obsidian is run by and has alot of the old Fallout 2 team on it, doing the stuff for this. I loved fallout 3 (just finished) but this should be very very good.

"When we learned that Obsidian Entertainment was actually going to get their hands on the Fallout franchise again, Diablo III took an immediate tumble down our most anticipated list. Despite the near certainty that it will be another FPS/RPG hybrid, Fallout: New Vegas overcomes a lot of the associated fears of riding on Fallout 3's FPS-inclined system by doing what most of us would consider a lost dream - returning the Fallout license to some of the people it originally belonged to.

While none of the developers credited as having created Fallout's "original game design" (Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, Jason D. Anderson, Chris Taylor, Jason Taylor, and R. Scott Campbell) are currently at Obsidian, the studio boasts names like Feargus Urquhart (Fallout 1/2 producer), Chris Avellone (Fallout 2 designer), J.E. Sawyer (Van Buren lead designer), and Scott Everts (Fallout 1/2 designer) amongst its staff.

And so we head into 2010 excited to see what they'll do with the Fallout license, and hopeful they will be able to overcome some of Fallout 3's flaws, most noticeably its less-than-stellar writing. That doesn't seem like much of a stretch, either, considering that these are the same people that gave us Planescape: Torment."
