Fallout 3 vs GTA IV

Like the summary says, I'm looking for a fun, immersing game to play over xmas break... I haven't played either series before, and have been a little concerned with the problems reported by GTA IV users, but tempted by the resoundingly positive reviews this game got when it was originally released.

At the same time, Fallout 3 also seems quite intriguing. I'm looking for something very immersive, good story, fun, something that provides that sense of "getaway into another reality" that can be so refreshing over a break from school

Fallout 3 definitely qualifies as "getaway into another reality". Especially in my case, since I live in the DC area, it's interesting to explore an alternate reality version of DC. The devs did a good job as far as attention to details when they were creating the game world and environment.

Gameplay-wise, I'm still kind of undecided as far as whether I like the game or not. It's heavy on the exploration, so if you're into non-stop frag-fests like the UT games or Diablo clones, it might not be your thing.

Fallout 3 is great. I haven't played GTA IV, but many people have called it disappointing and (literally) overrated by game reviewers.

GTA4 if your rig can handle it, a quad core is pretty much required. It's one of those games where its easy to lose track of time, and you play all night! I have not had any problems with the game since replacing my E6600 with a Q6600.

I'm currently playing Fallout 3 and it is good but it's a VERY SLOW game. I hope things pick up a little. I really do like the exploration part but I feel like some of the quests make no sense. The sounds are awesome though.

I loved fallout. I might replay it again just for kicks. It puts you in the zone.

I'm playing GTA4 currently and I love it too but don't really put me in the zone. It's different.

Get both. You won't regret it.

I'm in my second run through of Fallout 3 and I'm still coming across new stuff, and I spent well over 60 hours on the first run. Well worth it.

Not really a fan of either. Never really enjoyed the GTA series, and got bored of FO3 pretty quick and found the combat system uninspiring as both an FPS and an RPG.

the "quad core is required" is getting blow way out of proportion. MY GF has a dual core 3.0ghz and the benchmark in GTA says her average fps is 35, not sure what the min is, but playing it I never notice any slowdown. 35fps is smooth and very playable.

The great thing about GTA is it's an escape from reality but not sci-fi or fantasy, there's something strangely satisfying about running red lights while going full speed in a sports car and shooting people randomly.

Yes it is. I have a dual core as well and play GTA4 fine as well. It is a good idea to have a Quad Core now but not required just yet.

Not sure, I loved Fallout 3, ( I scored it 96% ) but right now I'm playing GTA IV and I like it as well. Runs great on my 3,8ghz e7300 btw. GTA IV is more of an open game, you'll have to keep yourself busy most of the time, where-as fallout 3 has you going on quests. Both are probably great games, but depending on your taste one might be better for you. I'm sure neither will really dissapoint though.

I guess a quad is not exactly "required" since i did play it for awhile on my E6600 @ 3.0ghz. Low to Mid 30's fps using the ingame benchmark tool. However the 26fps difference since upgrading to the Q6600 has certainly made the game much more enjoyable for me.

every so often a game comes along and i get totally absorbed by it.
i have 95+ hours into fallout 3 easily.
Its *arguably my favorite single player game of the decade.

i might be overrating it, but i dont like fallout 3..i LOVE it.
the people who blow through it in 20 hours are really doing themselves a disservice, there is so much to do and some great dialogue...and im not much for dialogue in games.

for the record, i didnt get into oblivion, or many other rpgs save diablo and some console rpgs.

as for gtaiv, i had it when i had a ps3, its gta *shrug, i always had a hard time sticking to mission in that series.

I have Vista 64 and FO3 has only crashed on exiting a few times, probably less than 5. I guess I just got lucky this time.

me likely far cry 2. I haven't tried fallout3 yet but farcry 2 is addictive but not too bad. Fallout3, from what i have heard, is pure uncut cocaine.

Fallout 3 is the game of the year for me. GTA 4 is just...blah. Way overrated...how the hell did that game keep getting perfect scores??

GTA 4 is like the rest of the GTA games, except properly done. Driving is good, cars actually take damage 'properly', shooting mechanics are better, driving is nice and the story is more cohesive than all the old ones. However, it isn't really immersive. You can buy some clothes, pimp your house/ride, but never really feel part of it. All characters are pretty much cannon fodder and over the top.

Fallout 3 felt a lot more immersive and cohesive to me. You could pimp your house/body, rack up the body count and explore. The moment you realize that the word is over in the game, and this is what's left, you start getting into it a lot more.
