I received Fallout 3 a couple years ago for Christmas and never got around to playing it. I'm wanting to play something like Oblivion and just finished Mass Effect 3 so this is feeling like a great time to get into the game. Should I purchase all of the DLC expansions ahead of time or do those only kick in once you beat the original game? I want to get the best all around experience. Thanks.

Look for a goty edition used for cheap, the non goty only trades in for $4 lol so try to sell it on craigslist for like $10 then buy the goty for like $25 hopefully.

I have the non goty edition also and I havent played it yet. I had the goty edition on pc and played like 30 hours of it then sold my rig, plus I played like 20 hours of it on PS3 before. I have yet to start it on the 360 tho. I know once I start playing it I will put in a good 20+ hours before I even play anything else thats why I havent started it

The one DLC(included in the GOTY) increased your max level to 30 from 20, which helps a lot. You could probably max out your guy at level 20 2/3s of the way into the regular game, so its nice having that extra cushion.
I'd also recommend getting the GOTY just for that I guess. I have it, and am trying to beat the main game as best I can before I get into the add-ons, and am already at level 25. They really should've made the max 50 or something.

Do you need the GOTY disc to play or can you just borrow a friend's GOTY, install it onto your Xbox's hard drive and play with your regular CD?

I think you can install it off another disc. It's a two disc set, and the second holds the DLC, but you only need the first to play.

So it looks like it will cost me 4000 points to get all of the DLC in the GoTY edition which is about $50. The full game is $60 new and I'm not having much luck finding it used local unless I want to pay Gamestop's high price.

How safe is buying a game on eBay? Some of the auctions are around $25.

I just finished playing Fallout 3 (non-GOTY) and thought it was quite excellent. I've never played Oblivion or Mass Effect, so I can't comment on how it stacks up against those games. I did hit the level cap of 20 before finishing the game, but not too much before. Honestly, I stretched out the game by deliberately not finishing the main campaign and doing side quests, just 'cuz it was so darn fun.

Initially, I was very excited about getting the DLC packs. "Broken Steel" raises the level cap from 20 to 30. Then I read about how buggy the PS3 and PC versions are. Some people have had a lot of crashes or slow loading. I don't know about 360 version. Bethesda apparently still hasn't released a patch yet.

Anyway, I'm looking for a cheap GOTY edition for PS3. I'm hoping that I don't experience the bugs like some other people have.

I've bought a few games on eBay, and have not had any problems. YMMV

EDIT: I forgot to mention that even the original game (non-GOTY) freezes up on the PS3 sometimes. For me, it's annoying but not gamebreaking.

You can just get the Broken Steel DLC as that is the one that raises the level cap. It's the best DLC anyway.

You can get the GOTY edition for $40 online, but I got it for $30 when it was on sale, its almost Thanksgiving time again, no doubt it will be cheap again. Unless your in dire need to play it now, waiting a few months for it to be on sale somewhere wont kill ya.

edit: steam occasionally has the GOTY edition on sale, just pay attention to daily deals.

Broken Steel is the only Fallout 3 DLC you'll ever need. Mind you The Pitt and Point Lookout are very good too. But Broken Steel let's you keep playing after you've beaten the main quest. Without giving the ending away, you can't go back and finish side quests after ending the main story without it. Also adds new perks, weapons, a new major quest, and ups the level cap to 30.

Thanks for all the help. I think I will just go with some of the essential DLC and probably pick up the strategy guide.

The standard game has a solid 80 hours of quality gameplay in it. I never got around to the DLC because I never felt like I'd seen everything in the main game. So you definitely dont need to run out and buy the DLC ahead of time.
