Those are great suggestions, everyone. Thanks!!

By the way, I agree about the Ranger armor. I wear it right now and I plan to continue wearing it. I more wanted the T-51b so I could look completely awesome when I feel like it, but not necessarily for the DR.

I just gave the armor to Charon, so that it never gets damaged. It really cut down on the number of times I had to reload due to him dying.

I did the same thing - gave the power armor to Charon. It's too bad you can't give Dogmeat armor :).

I used the super mutant for a little while them told him to buzz off. He cramped my sneaking style. I did enjoy watching the kids from Little Lamplight get mangled by a giant radscorpion, though.

After just exploring off and on I did get dogmeat and I kept him till close to the end of the story when you lose all followers and I just didn't bother to go retreive him. I didn't have too many problems with him dying unless I was trying to just run through the wastes and not fight anything he'd stop and fight whatever got too close. With dogmeat you can see his health bar and if it's getting low while you are still in combat. You can run up and talk to him, there is a dialog option to use a stimpak on him and it will heal him.

I also picked up Charon. I just gave him a stack of stimpaks and he'd use one when he needed which didn't seem too often. When I could I gave him a repaired suit of Tesla power armor and the Terrible shotgun. He never died once the whole time.

I did alot of sneaking and 99.9% VATS for combat. With a sneak attack crit to the head giving me one shot kills even with the hunting rifle / ol' painless. Having a him there worked great. He'd draw the attn of the enemy which made it easier for me to stay hidden.
