I just updated video drivers and that didn't help.

This is what Event Viewer says:
Faulting application name: Fallout3.exe, version: 1.7.0.3, time stamp: 0x4a40f18b
Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x1935d09d
Faulting process id: 0x5e8
Faulting application start time: 0x01cb99832310f842
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3\Fallout3.exe
Faulting module path: unknown
Report Id: 941ef1b4-0576-11e0-a47b-00241dd33041

Any ideas?

Gigabyte P55M-UD2, Core i5 750, Sapphire Vapor-X Radeon 4890, 2x2Gb G.Skill DDR3..all stock clocks on Win7 Pro. This seems to be a relatively recent phenomenon - ran fine the other day. No hardware changes..it happens in the same spot when I go outside in the dark (just outside of Vault 106, heading north). It crashes at max detail and min detail.

Google for ini file setting that tells the game to use only 2 cores. No more crashing for me after that,

That didn't fix it. :(

Maybe I should upgrade to an SSD and reinstall everything..maybe that would fix it. It worked for a while...wtf?!

Had a similiar problem. Don't know what fixed it, now. I may have gone back to an older save. I never did get much recognizable feedback from attempts to fix the game. Eventually it just quit crashing...much. Have you checked out any of the unofficial patches for mention of this issue?

I've spent some time looking around via Google and haven't found anything conclusive. Apparently this game crashes a LOT for many different reasons. I'll try reinstalling just for kicks...but so far I'm not having much luck.

0x.... errors are most often hardware. Run memtest86 on your ram.

Edit: Reinstalled the game and all is well. Weird.
