Fallout 3 GOTY freezing

pontifex

Lifer
I bought Fallout 3 GOTY on steam and it freezes after playing for a bit. The sound works but the video freezes and I have to kill the process.

I found 2 posts about editing the fallout.ini file to solve it and did that but it still doesn't work.

i'm using windows 7, quad core i7 cpu, 8 gb ram, and a radeon hd 6900m

any suggestions?

Quad core is the problem, IIRC. There is an edit to a config file to make it only use 2 cores. I had this problem and it fixed it. Was what you tried to change in the ini file or something else?

yes, although it appeared that i didn't save the file after editing. did it again and saved this time and it seemed to have worked, although when i went to leave megaton, it got super slow and wouldn't let me do anything besides look around (very slowly).

Look in steam's Fallout 3 community posts. This is a common problem, I have it. The solution is there. Can't remember exactly, it may be changing an INI. file. It does have to do with it being a Windows 7 issue.

I had a devil of a time getting Fallout 3 to run on a very similar system. I went through Gopher's excellent modding videos on Youtube - then it ran pretty good, had a PC-appropriate interface, and was pretty as hell.
