Fallout 3 Gameply Question

I never played the other Fallout games, but I gather they were RPGs. What style of game is the new one? Is it purely a turn based RPG (like the FF series) or is it a shooter with RPG elements?

The game looks very cool, but none of the ads I've seen really give me a feel for what the gameplay is really like.

(i just kid, but that's the best description)

it's really quite true. i called it a Fallout mod for Oblivion in one of the other F3 threads.

And what kind of game is Oblivion? That is another one I've heard of and never really played. When I was into PC gaming years back with it was limited to FPS and flight sims. And a little RTS.

it's an First person action RPG.
you move, attack, etc in real time but your character has stats and skills that you can upgrade. there's also lots of dialog.

Targeted shots are turn-based: you press a key, the game freezes, you pick the target areas and attacks based on action points limit, then you see a cinematic of the targeted shots. After that you're back to real-time until your action points regenerate.

Early on when your small guns stat is weak you should try to use targeted shots as much as possible since they do more damage. Plus the cinematics of crippling limbs and blowing off heads are "bloody mess" fun.

Is there an option to filter Violence/Language as in the first two Fallouts?

Actually, you can get critical hits and blow off limbs without vats.

Do yourself a favor and bookmark metacritic.com where you can do a lot of research on the games you're interested and plan on buying. If you check out the video reviews of Fallout 3, you'll have a pretty good idea of what kinda play style you're getting into.
