I've had it for quite some time, but never got around to playing it. I've been thinking of loading it up and giving it a try.

Will it run on XP without problems? Also any hints and tips, for starting out?

Yes, it runs on XP. Tips: Don't waste your time with a melee character.

Yeah, I bought the package of FO, FO2, and Tactics from Amazon for lieke $10. All games ran fine and patches were already installed.

My only recommendation is to be sure to patch the game befor you play. Gifted is always good. Melee and Unarmed characters aren't too goo in the late game. Don't worry about ammo or money...there is a ton of it in the game.

I haven't tried FO2 under XP but for FO1 I had to turn on Win98 compatbility mode. I still got this glitch once in a while where the screen turns black, then gets repainted as you mouse over it.

Tip: small guns and energy weapons, plus speech
Tip: pick gifted then put extra points into INT to get back some of the lost skill points

Melee wasn't as good as small guns or energy weapons, but it's fun to use, and comes in handy here and there. A good choice if you're willing to forego energy weapons in your second play-through or something.

I disagree. I'd always thought melee characters were worthless, but I overwhelmingly owned every area in Fallout 1 with melee + unarmed + sneak. You can literally go right up to a hostile without them noticing, open combat, and punch them in the eyes 4 times.

Try that against guys in power armor :)

Even a super sledge is too low in damage, though the knockback is fun.

I sometimes built up enough unarmed for the boxing in vegas and martial arts in frisco but didn't use it much elsewhere.

You're on. I'll start playing Fallout 2 with full melee mode tomorrow :). Edit - I did mean punch them in the eyes with a power fist, you realize :).

I spent possibly hundreds of hours playing those 2 games (FO1 & FO2) -- a couple of my top favs of all time by far

*Avoid becoming a slaver* the perks might seem decent at time but dealing with anyone later is a hassle (unless you're a bad man and wipe out entire towns that is ;) )

I used to focus on small weapons first on and then try to boost up energy weapons later on

did the melee run through but i'd level up like crazy as much as possible (running around the waste for hours)

Gogamer has the Fallout package as part of it's 48 hour sale, I think. May have to pick it up, though BioShock is taking up all of my time right now.

One thing I'd suggest, is that action points mean everything in this game. Try to get as many as you can to start, and then pick every perk you can get to increase these points. These points let you move, and if you can't move, you can't do much. And you can't stay out of trouble.

I have yet to try running it on XP- don't know how it would do.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to be starting up this weekend.

Do you have to put it into compatability for an older version of windows?

I kinda remember hearing that a high Int is good as well as Perception. Is this correct?

I also heard that you can get power armor and it is very good, but do you need a high Strength for it or was it only in the 1st game?

What about the bigger guns, do they require a high Strength?

Fallout 1 and 2 work fine for me in Windows XP.

Yeah. I wasn't too big on luck, or charisma. Intelligence, perception, and agility were my favorites when creating a marksman. You'll also want to take into account the fact that certain attributes get boosts during the course of the game, so don't start with 10 in anything. GameFAQs.com can give you a startup guide.

Power armor requires 6 strength, I think.

What about the bigger guns, do they require a high Strength?

Yes, and they'll chew up your inventory room.

A few things:

1. There are creatures in the waste that are practically immune to energy weapons, and thus are a pain. Once you come across them, use gauss weapons.
2. Never give a companion an automatic weapon. They tend to be stupid and can and will hit you by accident during a burst fire.
3. Companions can use different weapons and armor than they come with. BUT you have to give them to them (hint: the trade screen for people in your party? Unlike merchants, you don't have to give them items to GET items from them.). Humans can wear power armor, if you can find/buy it. When you give them weapons/armor, they don't change to the best stuff automatically. You have to tell them to use their best weapon and best armor. Also, they DO get the strength bonus from wearing power armor, just like you do.
4. The higher your charisma, the more companions you can have (up to 5, I think).
5. The higher your perception, the better you are at shooting or hitting things. If you make a called shot, it require more AP but if you hit, it can blind or cripple them. Knocking them down gives you a bonus to all of your normal and called shots while they're down.
6. If you go do boxing, it's illegal to kick or punch without a boxing glove, but hitting below the belt is fine. Oh, and using a loaded set of boxing gloves for extra damage.
7. You can raise each stat by one point, so don't max anything out to 10 on character creation. Power armor/Advanced Power Armor gives you a +3/4 bonus to strength, respectively, so if you can start off with a STR of 5, get the strength boost, and the armor to boost it to 10. Also, drugs can boost your stats temporarily, but emphasis on TEMPORARILY. Addiction and withdrawal is a bitch.
8. Books can raise some skills up to 90%, like survival, guns, science, and repair
9. Tag speech for sure, to be diplomatic. Doctor can be used for some self-healing or to repair crippled limbs, and you need it at 90% to activate an optional quest. Lockpicking is also worth tagging. I wouldn't tag it, but get science up to around 90% again, as it will also be useful for activating an optional side-quests.
10. Sex. Have it. A lot. Seriously, if you want to be a porn star (no, you don't see anything, the screen fades to black for half a sec) you have to have experience. It's a decent way to make extra cash. Just remember, junkies don't get work. (Seriously, if you're characters high or suffering withdrawal symptoms, they'll fire you).
11. If you boost skills/stats, try talking to some people again. Sometimes new conversation trees will open with people like Myron once you have some science or doctor skills at a high level.
12. It can be a pain, though you can get around it by using drugs to boost your intelligence, but with an EXTREMELY low intelligent character, you get different dialog options, but also lose access to quests. So maybe try that if you play over again.
13. The time limit? There is no time limit. Really, have fun, it literally doesn't matter for game play purposes.

I've been playing FO2 lately on Vista with hardly any problems. It might crash once in an all day game-athon.

16. Don't give jet to a follower with a heart condition. Oops.
17. There is a completely different dialog with the elder after the Temple of Trials if you build a minimum INT moron character, it's good. There is other moron-specific dialog and quest solutions in the game.

Here's a transcript posted to Newsgroups: comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.rpg around the time FO2 came out:

-----------
I'm using a character with an INT of
1 right now. I went to Vault City tonight try to find the location of
the GECK, and the dialogue was cracking me up! In Vault City, most
people will have the guards escort you out of the city if you try to
talk to them. However, I got into the Vault without even becoming a
Citizen(not that it would be possible to become a Citizen with such low
INT)! I went to talk to Skeev. He went through his usual bit of how
to get forms for a Day Pass, and the conversation went something like
this:

Me: Furms?
Skeev: Hmm... you know, I have someone I'd like you to meet. Come with
me.
Me: Okee dokee

He then took me to the Servant Allocation Center, and the conversation
that ensued was a riot:

Skeev: I found this moron in the Wastes. I think he'll be a good
servant.
Guard: I don't know. He's obviously retarded.
Me: Ree - tar - dead! Pooooooooooooooooo!
Skeev: You need someone to clean up the Vault, right?
Me: Valt? GEK?
Guard: I guess he'll do. I suppose you want a finder's fee?
Me: Fee? Peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

And then I found myself in the Vault! I then talked to the woman on the
first floor:

Woman: Hi, are you a new Citizen?
Me: Urgh.
Woman: I see. You must be the new help from the Servant Allocation
Center. You should go see Martin on the third floor, um, hmm... You go
Martin, understand?
Me: HUGO MARTIN!
Woman: You go Martin on third floor now, OK?
Me: ME NOW HUGO MARTIN ON THIRD FLOOR!
Woman: There must be a shortage at the Servant Allocation Center if
they're using simpletons like this.

So I went to the third floor to go see Martin:

Martin: Acccckkk!
Me: Aieeeeee!
Martin: P-phew! You s-scared m-me!
Me: Aieeeeee! Aieeeeee!
Martin: Y-you have to b-be q-quiet, OK?
Me: Okee dokee.
Martin: W-what are y-you l-looking for?
Me: GEK.
Martin: Y-you can probably f-find what you're l-looking for in the
c-computer... um, g-go to the t-talking box.
Me: Tanks.

So I click the hand icon on the computer:

Description: You see a metal box that is talking to itself in a woman's
voice. The woman must be trapped inside the box! It must be awfully
cramped in there.
Me: Hewwo? Hewwo?
Description: There is no answer from within the box.
Me: [Attempt to pry one of the boards off the box to let the woman
out.]
Description: You crawl under the metal box and manage to pry one of the
boards free. However, the woman is not inside. All you see are dead
snakes and flashing lights.
Me: [Put hand in snakes and feel around.]
Description: You put your hand in the snakes and feel around. Still no
sign of a woman. You are about to pull your hand free but you didn't
realize that... ZZZZAP!!!
Me: Ouchhhh!!! That tynglez!
Description: [You black out.] (Got zapped down to 1 HP)
Description: When you wake up a few moments later, there is still no
sign of a woman.
Me: [Shamble off.]
Description: You are about to shamble off when all of a sudden you
notice that next to one of the flashing lights in the metal box is the
same character that's on your PIPBoy thingy. He's pointing at a slot
that is about the size as your PIPBoy thingy. Maybe he wants to talk to
your little PIPBoy!
Me: [Put my little handheld PIPBoy in slot so he can talk with big
PIPBoy.]
Description: My, the two PIPBoys must have quite a bit of talking to
do! They talk for a long time, but you can't understand a word of it.
It sounds mostly like whirring and grinding to you. Wow, they must be
smart! When they are done talking, you notice that your little PIPBoy
thingy has something marked "Vault 15" on it, whatever that is.
Me: [Take PIPBoyee.]

And that's how I got the location of Vault 15, which is far different
from how I got it my first trip through the game. I was doubling over
with laughter as I did it this way. I can't wait to see how many more
humorous ways there are for low INT characters to solve quests! :)

By the by, for those who have been having issues with the screen turning solid black while playing the original Fallout, I've discovered a possible fix. If you have "autohide" set for the taskbar, turn it off. It doesn't fix the problem for everyone, but someone told me about this and it took care of the problem for me perfectly.
