I was thinking about picking these games up and giving them a go. I will play Fallout 3 at some point when this year, but it's just not in the cards at this point. Should I play the first 2 before delving into the most recent, or are they too outdated to be fun at this point?

Play the first. You can skip the second. Forget Tactics.

Yes why not? If you can stand the graphics indeed. If you can then I'm sure it'll be fun.

Depends on what you find fun. Personally I don't find any game too outdated to be fun.

wow that must suck for you

How does that suck?
I don't really ever find myself waiting for a new game to come out, I just go through my pile of ones I have lined up to play. I'm a little OCD and play one through completely before I start another.
Also, I'm able to feed the habit with the bargain bin :)

I agree with this man. both first and second are excellent games, but the first one you can beat in a reasonable amount of time even doing optional stuff, while the second one is kinda just too big. Tactics I never played much of, and theres a reason for that, its just not the same and not that great imo.

You don't really need to play either to enjoy fallout 3 however, I'd say if you play through the first game you'd be doing it to play a good game, not as some kind of prereq to understand or enjoy fallout3.

I played the majority of Fallout 2 before having an issue with my Windows install and losing my saved games.

I played with no mods and the image was fed unmodified to my 42" Plasma HDTV. Considering its age, resolution and the size of my screen... it was perfectly acceptable and a very enjoyable game.

Graphics barely matter.

Fallout 1-2 were great story-driven RPGs like Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape: Torment. If you can get past the graphics they're a lot of fun.

Tactics is also a lot a fun if you realize going in that it is a tactics game, more like Jagged Alliance 2 than FO 1-2, there are still RPG elements (stats, skills, loot) just with a less deep story.

Cool! Downloading now, thanks!

And to everyone else; thanks for the reply's. I'm definitely not the type of gamer who needs good graphics to enjoy a story, they just make it that much easier to get into a particular game. I'm downloading Fallout 1 now and looking forward to checking it out.

I think he must've misread your post as, "I don't find any outdated game to be fun."

Nothing I've found so far. I haven't really gotten into the game yet though...not enough time :(

I found this at Amazon last night while I was ordering Fallout 3: Fallout Collection. I figured I'd wait to see if I like Fallout 3 before deciding to get the old games. I am a big fan of the other Black Isle games though, and I don't mind games that don't stick completely to a high fantasy formula (I liked Arcanum, for example, and that game was steampunk, not high fantasy).

I'm playing through FO2 after finishing FO1, and am currently trying to get near-mint copies of the original games on e-Bay.

And then hunting down Brian Fargo and Chris Avellone to sign them.

They'll sit next to my copies of the Dungeons and Dragons (red book) Dungeon Master's Guide and AD&D Player's Handbook, both signed by Gary Gygax.

At the very least, it's a good idea to play some of Fallout 1/2 so you can get a taste of the universe. The graphics are pretty bad, but since it's a 2d isometric game, they're not really that bothersome - with this kind of view, the gameplay becomes more important than the graphics. If you plan on playing Fallout 3, getting a taste of the Fallout universe will be nothing but beneficial for you.

Play 1/2. I know many people who have played through both games several times, sometimes after many years. They're classic, and it's easy to get over the older graphics with the great story and environment. And they both have a lot of timeless fun. I'll probably end up replaying these every few years.

Don't bother playing Tactics
