Falling Tree Kills Cub Scout Camping In Pa.
GARDNERS, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania park manager says an accident that killed a 7-year-old Cub Scout was "against all odds."
Owen Lentz was sleeping in a tent with his father during a father-son weekend when a 40-foot pine tree fell on the tent.
Owen Lentz was pronounced dead at the scene. His father, Lee Lentz, who was sleeping in the same tent, was struck on the left side of his head. He was treated at a hospital and released.
Another scout was in a tent next to the Lentzes'. He also was struck and suffered a broken pelvis. He is in satisfactory condition at a medical center.
The manager at Grove Furnace State Park said the weather was calm but the tree was diseased.
Park manager Kenneth Boyles said the 40-foot pine crashed down on the tents shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday.
The scouts were part of a group of 11 from Camp Hill on a father-son outing at the park in central Pennsylvania. Owen's first-grade teacher called him a "teacher's dream."
