Fall semester housing options: need HELP.

Okies, I looked a two places last week. I'm pretty sure which one i prefer but I'm not sure if maybe it's the right choice.

#1: Some guy's house..about 20-30 minutes away from school (depending on traffic). $250 a month, for 6 months. Room in his basement...3 rooms total..2 others are already rented out. I get the tiniest room..in the middle, no windows. Has a bed, a cheap table small dresser, cheap nightstand and relatively spacey closet. Basement has kitchen area, REALLY scary looking bathroom, laundry stuff and a dining table. No carpet, and the whole place kinda smells like gas. Poorly ventilated, I guess.

#2: Middle aged couple's house...about 5-10 minutes away from school. One bedroom upstairs for $450, one downstairs for $550. Will explain about both rooms separately. UPSTAIRS first, small room (kinda cramped)...shared bathroom with other 2 occupants of upstairs rooms. Both guys...going for their PhD or something at my school. And that's pretty much it about that. DOWNSTAIRS, slightly larger room (spacy), private bathroom and she offered a parking spot in the garage (which would be very helpful w/ my new car and all).

For both #1 and #2, utilities are included w/ rent (to a certain extent..as long as I'm not having cook-offs every night or something). #1 has no land phone line and I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable living in a basement (extreme fear of creepy crawlies). #2 has land phone line..but I gotta connect it myself or something..whole house is carpeted and it's just comfy and cozy..and the wife is pretty much in charge of the rent stuff. It's also on a month to month thing...as long as I give her a month's notice in advance, I can pretty much move out whenever i want.

So...which would be better?? #1 or #2? Sorry for such a long post, but I can't really make it any shorter..and I can't really summarize. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA. 🙂

I voted 2 but it depends on your financial situation. I would have taken the basement room because I had to pay my own way and didn't have a lot of dough, plus I was rarely at home. Just needed a place to crash. OTOH, if you spend time in the basement you might get kinda depressed since there are no windows and no phone, ie: it's like a prison. The month-to-month option on #2 sounds really appealing since if you can't afford it / don't like it, you can bail. Have you looked into normal apartments yet?

Yeah, you make #2 sound much better.

I guess it's because I've got my heart set on that one.

but what about price..and all that junk? that's what my mom's worried about. That I'll have trouble paying the rent for the second place. It's 2 times more than the first one. I'm only asking my mom to help me out w/ half the second place's rent..which would equal her paying for all of the first place's rent. The other half..I'll get a job and somehow...manage.

argh..i dunno. She's making feel like I shouldn't want to live in the second place. 🙁

can't do normal apartments. Too expensive...no roommates. Girls I've found who wanted to look around w/ me...all bailed or never called back. FOund some other girls w/ rooms already...but they all sounded kinda iffy.. so, normal apartments = not an option.

It sort of depends on what kind of person you are. Some people don't care at all where they live and can be happy as long as the place isn't on fire. Other's need a place to meet a certain standard. If you think you can manage in the first place, and money is a big issue, then get it. If you feel like the environment of the second will serve you better and you swing the rent, get it. As for your mom, you'll be living there, not her. Do what you think is right for you.

I hooked up with a guy from my campus housing center, have you looked there? They do a pretty good job of matching roommates.

You could always talk to the the couple in the 2nd place. Tell them a maximum price that you can pay, and see if they'll take it. Couldn't hurt!
That 1st place sounds nasty. Although the bathroom can be cleaned or renovated, it's a lot harder to put windows into a basement. Light is a good thing.
