Fake Weed, Real Drug: K2 (and I don't mean the mountain)

Analog

Lifer
Teens are getting high on an emerging drug called "fake weed," a concoction also known as K2 and "spice" that is also causing hallucinations, vomiting, agitation and other dangerous effects.
In the last month, Dr. Anthony Scalzo, a professor of toxicology at Saint Louis University, has seen nearly 30 cases of teenagers experiencing these adverse effects after smoking the fake weed, a legal substance that reportedly offers a marijuana-like high.

Origin of K2
This K2 drug was first created in the mid-1990s in the lab of organic chemist John W. Huffman of Clemson University, who studies cannabinoid receptors. He's not sure how the recipe for what is named JWH-018 (his initials) got picked up, but he did publish details on a series of compounds including JWH-018 in a book chapter. Even before that book came out, he recalls learning that in China and Korea people were selling the compound as a plant growth stimulant.
As for where it was first smoked or used as a recreational drug, Huffman thinks perhaps somewhere in Europe.
"Apparently somebody picked it up, I think in Europe, on the idea of doping this incense mixture with the compound and smoking it," Huffman told LiveScience. "You can get very high on it. It's about 10 times more active than THC," the active ingredient in marijuana.
From a chemist's perspective, that means K2 has an affinity for the cannabinoid brain receptor (CB1) that's about 10 times greater than THC. For the less chemically inclined, it means you can smoke a lot less K2 to get just as high.

Oh no! Not hallucinations, vomiting and agitation!

Make it illegal, immediately! That will keep people from getting it.....

What are the side effects of alcohol? Vomiting? Agitation? Death?

Hmm.

It's good stuff, the high is more like eating weed even though you are smoking it.. Takes longer to kick in, but does have a very weed like high. I bet it's outlawed in the US soon, but I've been enjoying it.

JWH-018 is quite inferior to CP 55,940. JWH-018 isn't even a cannabinoid; it's just an agonist for CB1 and CB2 receptors. It's more popular than the CP class of substances as it's much more chemically stable but is def inferior in it's psychoactive effects.

That being said, it's certainly far less dangerous than ethanol or tobacco, as is weed, so ppl freaking out over it is unwarranted.

I'm kinda interested to be honest. The only reason that I don't smoke weed is that it is illegal and could prevent future job opportunities. If this K2 stuff is completely legal I would be willing to try it out.

better get on it

It's... interesting. 😉

If you want to try it, do it soon. I cannot imagine these substances are going to be legal for long.
Salvia has been seeing many states moving to make it illegal.

What's actually funny is I think K2 does not contain that JWH-18 drug, well... most of the K2s. I think it's only the K2 Summit. Though almost each and every legal-marijuana mix says it only contains natural substances, some sneak in some chemical like the one of this topic.

My buddy in the service swears by K2 Summit. He's experimented with quite a few various similar products, for the same reasons. Though he used to enjoy the real stuff quite often, he's said it's just become cheaper and removed any potential ramifications by going this route. He's always telling me of the random shit him and his buddies in his unit do.

Seriously? You must be the only one on the planet. 😛

Or even worse, banging a fat girl. D:

Actually that is how drugs work. Clinical trials to get a new drug to market take years and several hundred million dollars.

Yeah but it prevents any chemical that has makes you feel good, but also has no negative consequences, from getting legal status.

Why is that?
Alcohol and nicotine are both things I say should stay perfectly legal, even though both can cause some harm.
Marijuana should join them, and it causes no harm, and hell... has some seriously awesome medical benefits.

I think it's only a matter of time before the bureaucrats get pinged by the tobacco industry, begging for a little legal assistance. And then it'll happen real fast like, and the failing tobacco companies will be saved with a new industry.

I think I've managed to figure out the drug approval process in my 25 years on the planet. Thanks for educating me again, though.

That was merely a tongue-in-cheek response to the 'weed is illegal so don't do it' crowd. Hell, what I really meant was making everything illegal until it's proven safe.

And you know what, fuck it. How many class action law suits have been filed over drugs approved by the FDA and THEN found to be harmful? I bet we could think of a few. I'm sure the pharma companies don't lobby like hell to get drugs approved when the drug in question probably shouldn't be.

These "spice" products have always worked really well for me. However, they're VERY potent, to the point where smoking a normal amount of weed will have you screwed up pretty bad.

As for vomiting and agitation...I don't know about that. It's pretty similar to a weed high, to be honest.

Well I've smoked the K2 summit three times now and last night I've gotta say without a doubt, I got high as fuck. Dunno if I'll keep buying it, but shit most definitely works.
