how about an ati 6 series?

38x0 - Nov. 15, 2007
48x0 - June 25, 2008
58x0 - Sep. 23, 2009

well maybe not until next year. probably need 32 nm worked out first.

I thought they were going to release Southern Islands on 40nm later this year...and I doubt they'd continue using the 5xxx series naming for those chips.

Omg, I don't care what's released. Just do something to bring down prices faster!!!

I'm with this post. There have already been some $30 price drops with the gtx400 series. New egg has some gtx460's for $249, and the gtx470's for $329, but I still don't think at any price range there is a big incentive for me to upgrade from my gtx260 216.

The new rumored Fermi with all 512 shaders unlocked is supposedly running 20-25mhz faster and also will have 25w tdp less than the current 480 shader. Sounds like it's everything Nvidia wanted the current gtx480 to be. The ATI refresh will be interesting to see how much they will improve performance while keeping TDP's and die size under control on the same node process.

1stQ, 2011 they are releasing a half baked 40nm Southern islands. More like a refresh.

And you know this for a fact how? Please post a link. I have heard rumors for big changes as well, like a change to a 4 shader based instead of 5 shader based system (it means more of the bigger shaders which are more comparable to nvidia's). I also heard it would come out before 2011. Also, I doubt Ati has been twiddling their thumbs for the last 9 months, if they really needed to, all it would take would be a 5890 to equalize things. If the 485 makes Ati release their new products faster or cheaper then I wish for them to come out as soon as possible.

Common knowledge and has been discused many times.

if nVidia can release a 512sp version with higher clocks (750/1500) while keeping the power level the same or less than their current flagship, count me in. It needs a good 15-20% performance boost within the existing power envelope.

Not sure what ATI is working on... You would think it would be a redesign at this point, or perhaps just a higher clocked version of their current GPU. Although, I will be extremely dissapointed if ATI just increases clocks 15% and calls it a day.

Either way, lets get the next refresh out here... I don't want to buy a card today when some of these newer cards could be less than 6 months away...

OP you must have missed the fact that in that very same thread Kyle basically says its all bullshit based on an old april fools joke.

Your two sources bring in a lot of doubt whether that will actually happen. Both noted there wasnt even a closed door demonstration of the technology.

Half baked = just a 40nm refresh with enhancements, not a new chip design.

Lets hope its more then just a higher clocked model a.k.a. 5890, because it probrobly would need core clocks over 1200 to beat a 512 sp fermi with higher clocks.

Whats with all the hostility?

It's kinda odd to call that half-baked, because the only similarities are the shader architecture (which is getting modified) and the process node.

The entire uncore is going to be new.

Sorry about the sources being meh, I just googled ati southern islands with post dates within the last month and picked the top 2, I didn't even read them.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/video/...outhern_Islands_Family_of_Graphics_Chips.html

And I think part of the hostility is people being obtuse, for example, continuing to insist SI will be a clock refresh, while it's been confirmed to be a hybrid architecture.

Also, there is no 512 shader Fermi part, Kyle confirmed it was a joke.

Besides, like Nvidia would sell any fully functional parts for a desktop product when they have the 90%+ margin Tesla parts.

That is true.

What about the source of this thread that as been bashed as an Aprils Fool joke?

Quite credible...

That didn't stop nVidia from creating the GeForce 9 series based on the G92, which was a "half baked" G80 used in the first part of the GeForce 8 series and even used for a few GF 8 parts before being renamed/rebadged

But that also didn't make the parts bad, they provided incredible price/performance and can still chug along even in today's games.

It doesn't matter how "half baked" it is. What matters is that Southern Islands will likely be notably faster and/or more efficient than Evergreen, particularly likely in newer games with DX11

A big clue that it will be faster is how the 5870 is only 3% faster at equal clocks compared to a 5850, even with more shaders. The supposed change to a 4 shader system would still have a lot of the parallelism that helped the 5XXX but with more of the core shaders. A new uncore also helps load up the core properly. SI could be quite fast.

LOL@ green fanboy(s) still pinning their(his) hopes on the mythical 512 shader part Fermi.
Considering the current Thermi's ridiculous heat output, "Halfbaked" was an unfortunate choice of adjective now wasn't it....🙄

You know what Will? I don't think I have ever seen you contribute positively to any thread. Only
post to throw one liner stabs. First and only warning (this time around). Get it together and STOP the trolling immediately. Next troll anywhere, anytime gets you time off. A long time.
